Essex was chosen as the filming location for parts of Sasha Baron Cohen’s comedy film Grimsby – despite being nowhere near the Lincolnshire town. The comedian, known for his iconic roles in films like Borat and Ali G, has become a staple in the comedy movie scene.
Despite its name, Grimsby was actually filmed in various locations across Essex. The film follows the hilarious adventures of Nobby, a dimwitted man who reunites with his long-lost brother Sebastian, an MI6 assassin.
Together, they embark on a mission to prevent a terrorist attack at the World Cup final. One memorable scene, featuring Nobby queuing at a Job Centre, was shot along Montreal Road in Tilbury, Essex.

This town, located within the borough of Thurrock, is renowned for its port – one of Britain’s three major container ports and the main UK port for importing paper, including newsprint. It’s also home to the historic Tilbury Fort, situated on the Thames Estuary.
The fort, originally built by Henry VIII and where Queen Elizabeth I rallied her army to face the Spanish Armada, is often considered one of the best examples of its kind in England, complete with moats and bastioned outworks.
For the movie Grimsby, a faux Job Centre sign was erected on one of the shops in Tilbury, marking the start of filming. Cohen and his team also shot scenes at other locations in Essex, such as North Weald railway station and Epping Forest.
