GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) – Gwen Walz, the wife of Democratic Vice-Presidential Candidate Tim Walz, has been on the campaign trail leading up to the election.
She was supposed to have a stop in Green Bay last week, but due to delays and canceled flights, she was unable to make it in person.
Minnesota’s First Lady Gwen Walz says she relates to Wisconsinites.
“The town I lived in and graduated from high school was twice the size of Tim’s town and that was a town of 800 people,” said Mrs. Walz.
She says if former President Donald Trump and Senator JD Vance are elected small communities will be impacted.
“Donald Trump and JD Vance in Project 2025 say they’re going to cut the Department of Education, well, you know what comes through the Department of Education, a lot of funding for public high schools and you know who has public high schools? Small towns, right. They don’t charter schools, and they don’t have people trying to make a bunch of money on education, they have public schools, and those are funded by state taxpayers of course but by the Federal Department of Education too,” said Gwen Walz.
Wisconsin GOP Chairman Brian Schimming says the idea of eliminating the Department of Education has been discussed for years.
“Eliminating the dept of education is not new whatsoever, that’s been talked about for decades. the problem with education, the challenges that education faces, are kids learning the basics? are they learning what they need to go through life are not helped by another federal bureaucracy,” said Schimming.
Mrs. Walz says she is also concerned for women and making decisions for their own bodies.
“JD Vance and Donald Trump are proposing that 50-state abortion ban and that would mean no matter what we vote on in our state that would override it,” said Walz.
Chairman Schimming says that’s simply not true.
“There’s not going to be a national abortion ban. The president has said that he would not support it if he were president of the United States and if he does not support it, it will never see his desk,” said Schimming.
Both sides continue to campaign on the last day before the election fighting for your vote.
