Cairo – November 4, 2024: The Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Karim Badawi, announced plans for Egypt to increase its natural gas production by 20 percent, targeting a total output of 1 billion cubic feet per day.
He stated, “We are actively collaborating with our partners to foster an environment that encourages expanded production from existing fields and enhances exploration and supply to markets.”
Badawi made these remarks during the opening ministerial session of the Abu Dhabi International Petroleum Conference (ADIPEC 2024). He emphasized Egypt’s significant contribution to the energy export sector, particularly in oil, while highlighting the nation’s focus on gas exploration and market supply.
In his speech at the start of the conference today, he highlighted that Egypt is considered a regional hub in this sector, with gas refining capacities of approximately 40 million tons.
The session addressed the challenges posed by the increasing global population and the resulting rise in energy demand. It also tackled the triple energy dilemma, which involves providing energy affordably and sustainably, alongside the associated challenges and opportunities.
Other participants were Suhail Mohamed Faris Al Mazrouei, the UAE Minister of Energy and Infrastructure; Hardeep Singh Puri, the Indian Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas; and Ruth Nankabirwa Ssentamu, the Ugandan Minister of Energy and Mineral Development.
Badawi emphasized that approximately 1 in 10 people worldwide lacks access to electricity and that the energy sector is responsible for a significant share of greenhouse gas emissions.
He noted that geopolitical conditions are pushing some countries to continue relying on non-renewable energy sources.
The petroleum minister called on the global community to provide support and the necessary technology to developing countries to achieve a fair energy transition that aligns with their economic circumstances.
He also discussed the role of artificial intelligence in supporting climate action and energy transition efforts by developing new materials for clean energy technologies, such as improving solar and wind energy resources, enhancing energy storage capabilities, and improving climate and weather forecasts to aid better energy planning, while accelerating innovations in green energy sources.
He pointed out the importance of utilizing artificial intelligence to enhance the renewable energy landscape and contribute to building a more sustainable world for future generations.
The New York Times’s software engineers are on strike right now and they have a simple request for readers: don’t play Wordle or the crossword puzzle this week. The Times Tech Guild represents more than 600 tech workers who maintain The Times’ digital new empire.
The New York Times is a storied news organization but it’s also a tech company. It has thrived when so many other news outlets have failed, in part, because its pivot to digital was smart and robust. Games like Wordle, Spelling Bee, Connections, and the Crossword drive huge numbers to the Times. The NYT Cooking App is beloved by many and brings in a lot of revenue.
But all that tech requires a wealth of backend support. In 2022, the Times’ tech workers unionized and they’ve been negotiating with management ever since. They signaled back in September that they were prepared to strike and would do it around election day. According to a statement from the Guild, the current pain points between it and management are: return to office mandates, limits on subcontracting, pay and equity, and “just cause” job protections. Workers want a provision in their contract that would ensure employees are only terminated for misconduct or similar reasons.
“We have been sounding the alarm for weeks and cleared our schedules to get this contract done before the election week deadline,” Susan DeCarava, the president of The NewsGuild of New York said in a statement. “As workers and subscribers, we’re disheartened that the Times is willing to gamble with its election coverage to avoid agreeing to a fair and just contract. We remain ready to bargain and look forward to reaching an agreement our members at Times Tech Guild will ratify.”
Striking the day before the election is a calculated move designed to put maximum pressure on the paper at a time when its readership is spiking. The vaunted “election needle” is a staple of the Times’ coverage and it doesn’t run without the support of back-end tech workers. “We have robust plans in place to ensure that we are able to fulfill our mission and serve our readers,” Times spokesperson Danielle Rhoades Ha told The Washington Post in October as the threat of the strike loomed.
“Our union members and bargaining committee have done everything possible to avoid this ULP strike,” Kathy Zhang—a unit chair of the Tech Guild and a senior analytics manager at The New York Times—said in a statement about the strike. “But management is more willing to risk our election coverage than they are to agree to a fair deal with its workers. They have left us no choice but to demonstrate the power of our labor on the picket line. Nevertheless, we stand ready to bargain and get this contract done.”
The Tech Guild is asking that readers not cross the digital picket line. They want readers to show their support by avoiding the cooking app and any of the popular NYT Games. Anyone who wants to support the strikers more directly can donate to a GoFundMe which has already raised more than $50,000.
More than 700 Times journalists and Times Guild members signaled their support of the Tech Union in a press release. “We can’t do our jobs without the Tech Guild,” the journalists said in their pledge.

As a seasoned entrepreneur and tech enthusiast, I’ve been closely watching the intersection of artificial intelligence and politics, particularly as we approach the 2024 U.S. presidential election. The impact of AI on our democratic process is not just a matter for policy wonks and tech giants — it’s something that should be on every business owner’s radar.AI is transforming voter engagement through targeted messaging while also raising concerns about misinformation and consumer trust. This article explores how potential regulatory changes driven by election outcomes could reshape the business landscape, affecting everything from economic policies to brand loyalty. Entrepreneurs must be proactive in developing AI ethics policies, investing in AI literacy and preparing for various scenarios to navigate this evolving environment effectively. By understanding these dynamics, business owners can position themselves to thrive amidst the challenges and opportunities presented by the intersection of AI and politics. It’s more than just campaign adsWe’ve all seen how AI is transforming industries from healthcare to finance, but its role in shaping political outcomes is perhaps one of the most significant — and potentially concerning — developments of our time. AI is not just creating more targeted campaign ads (though it’s certainly doing that). It’s fundamentally altering how information is created, disseminated and consumed by voters. This shift has profound implications for businesses of all sizes.
Related: A Survey Asked Small Business Owners What They Really Care About in the 2024 Election — The Results Were SurprisingThe double-edged sword of AI in electionsOn one hand, AI offers incredible opportunities for voter engagement and education. Campaigns can use AI to craft personalized messages that resonate with individual voters, potentially increasing political participation. AI-powered chatbots can answer voter questions 24/7, making information more accessible than ever before.
However, the same technology that can inform can also misinform. We’re seeing an unprecedented surge in AI-generated deepfakes, misleading content and highly convincing disinformation campaigns. As a business owner, you might be thinking, “So what? How does this affect my bottom line?”The answer: in more ways than you might realize. Why business owners should care about AI in elections1. Regulatory whiplashThe outcome of the 2024 election could lead to dramatic shifts in AI regulation. Depending on who takes office, we could see anything from a hands-off approach to stringent new rules governing AI development and deployment. If you’re using AI in your business — and let’s face it, most of us are in some capacity — these potential regulatory changes could have a significant impact on your operations. From data privacy concerns to algorithmic bias, the legal landscape around AI is likely to evolve rapidly in the coming years.
2. Consumer trust and brand loyaltyAs AI-driven misinformation becomes more sophisticated, consumers are becoming increasingly skeptical of the information they encounter online. This erosion of trust doesn’t just affect political discourse — it spills over into how consumers view brands and make purchasing decisions. If your customers can’t trust what they see and read online, how can they trust your marketing messages? This growing skepticism could make it harder for businesses to build and maintain brand loyalty.3. Economic policy shiftsAI’s influence on voter behavior could lead to significant shifts in economic policy. Whether it’s tax policy, labor laws or international trade agreements, the outcome of AI-influenced elections could reshape the business environment in ways that directly impact your bottom line.If your customers are influenced by AI-driven political messaging, it could change their expectations and demands from businesses. For instance, if AI-powered campaigns successfully push for stronger environmental regulations, your customers might start expecting more eco-friendly practices from your company. Similarly, if AI helps spread ideas about worker rights, you might face pressure to change your labor practices.
Proactive steps for forward-thinking entrepreneursSo, what can you do to prepare your business for this AI-driven political landscape? Here are some actionable steps:Develop an AI ethics policy: Don’t wait for regulations to force your hand. Create a comprehensive AI ethics policy for your company now. This should cover how you use AI, how you protect customer data and how you ensure fairness and transparency in your AI-driven processes.Invest in AI literacy: Make sure you and your leadership team understand the basics of AI. This knowledge will be crucial for making informed decisions about using AI in your business and anticipating potential regulatory changes.Scenario planning: Conduct thorough scenario planning exercises. Consider how different election outcomes and subsequent policy changes could affect your industry. This foresight could give you a significant competitive advantage.Engage in advocacy: Join industry associations or advocacy groups that are working to shape AI policy. Your voice as a business owner matters in these discussions.Strengthen data security: Implement robust data privacy and security measures now. This will not only protect you from potential breaches but also position you well for compliance with future regulations.Build trust through transparency: Be open with your customers about how you use AI. Transparency can help build trust in an era of increasing skepticism. The bottom lineThe intersection of AI and politics is not just a fascinating technological development — it’s a business issue that demands our attention. By staying informed and taking proactive steps, we can not only protect our businesses from potential disruptions but also contribute to a more responsible and ethical AI-driven future. As entrepreneurs, we’re no strangers to adapting to change. The AI revolution in politics is just another challenge for us to meet head-on. By embracing this change and preparing for its implications, we can ensure our businesses don’t just survive but thrive in this new landscape.Remember, the future belongs to those who prepare for it today. Let’s make sure we’re ready for whatever the AI-influenced political landscape of tomorrow brings.

After a spring break visit to New York in March 2020, Anaik Sachdev’s mother was diagnosed with COVID-19. During those weeks at home, Anaik found comfort in books. They helped him escape isolation, even as his family struggled with illness.
Soon after, his grandmother tested positive and was hospitalized, and Anaik realized how harsh isolation can be. “I would FaceTime her during her stay at the hospital, and I saw that she had no sunlight in her room. She couldn’t interact with anyone — it felt so lonely,” he said. “Back home, we were reading books to pass time. I thought to myself that books could be a great escape from loneliness.”
Inspired by the books that had brought him comfort, he had an idea that would not only lift his grandmother’s spirits but would eventually reach thousands around the world. Anaik launched Loving Library on his 8th birthday.
Mission
Loving Library is known for kids helping other kids in need. Its mission is to inspire young people to support the mental health of others by putting books in the hands of children facing isolation, creating a youth-driven movement that fosters empathy and leadership.
Most Surprising Thing About the Organization
Founded by an 8-year-old, Loving Library remains a youth-driven organization today. Its Youth Ambassadors, ranging in age from 5 to 17, are the backbone of the project. From the 5-year-old delivering his first book to the 17-year-old organizing donations, Loving Library teaches young people to become active, empathetic changemakers. This hands-on experience builds skills like leadership, communication and project management — all while making a difference for peers in need.
Program Highlight
Loving Library’s 30 Youth Ambassadors have reached more than 16,000 children in underserved communities around the world. They provide books and journals that serve not only as a means of escape but as tools for emotional regulation and stress relief.
“I have learned that small acts can make big changes,” said 17-year-old Youth Ambassador Karina Koppikar. “I never thought that something as simple as a book could be a source of entertainment, escape and education, all in one.”
Future
Loving Library is excited to expand its Youth Ambassador program to build the next generation of philanthropic leaders. Through community service, Youth Ambassadors develop leadership and social-emotional skills while making a difference in the lives of others. The program also fosters self-esteem in underserved youth through meaningful connections and donated literature. By showing kids they are valued and can contribute to their communities, Loving Library builds lifelong civic engagement and mental health benefits for everyone involved.

They say to never judge a book by its cover, but these are definitely the exception. While contemporary titles usually have teams of designers and marketing specialists who’ll create an eye-catching design for the title to find its target audience, most of the time classic novels don’t get this treatment. Drawing from the creative possibilities that timeless books hold, illustrator Andres Moncayo created a series of modern minimalist book covers that cleverly sum up the story that lies within its pages.
Moncayo’s Book Covers project began after he was approached by a Singapore-based advertising agency to create a series of illustrations for a website launch campaign. “They were looking for a unique visual style to capture the essence of their brand,” the illustrator tells My Modern Met. The series features both centuries-old titles such as Moby Dick and Frankenstein as well as more contemporary titles such as Fight Club and The Alchemist.
A common design thread runs through the collection. A bright solid color serves as the backdrop, shining behind the main subject—usually the silhouette of a main character. Within this motif, a story unfolds, maybe depicting a key scene or mimicking a setting from the tale. Moncayo makes the most out of the limited design pieces to feature as much detail as possible, without any of the covers feeling overpacked.
The artist, who has a formal education in graphic design from a university in Bogotá, Colombia, believes that continuous learning and hands-on experience are equally important in honing one’s skills—something noticeable in his fresh takes on literary classics.
“I find book cover design incredibly challenging and rewarding,” he says. “The ability to condense the essence of an entire story into a single visual is a fascinating exercise in creative problem-solving. It’s a perfect blend of art and communication.”
While it’s tough for Moncayo to pick a favorite, he is particularly proud of his Life of Pi cover. “I’m a big fan of tigers, and I love the way the color palette and concept evoke the story’s adventurous spirit,” he shares. “I hope viewers will appreciate the creativity and thoughtfulness behind each design. Ultimately, I aim to create visuals that spark curiosity and encourage people to explore the stories within.”
