To Reassure Russian Tourists, Cuba Assures That Damage From Blackouts Was ‘Minimal’

During the general blackout, the regime supplied the hotels with water for their tanks and fuel for their generators.

14ymedio, Havana, 29 October 2024 — The fact that last week’s news of the blackout was published in the world’s leading newspapers did not do the Cuban regime any favors, as it fears losing the few tourists that continue to arrive on the island. On Monday, the commercial director of the Cuban Ministry of Tourism, Gihana Galindo Enríquez, tried to dispel the bad opinions about Cuba as a vacation destination for Russians, a market that has shown growth in recent years. “The impact of this situation on the country’s tourism sector was minimal,” she assured the Tass agency.
Galindo does not deny the crisis, but treats it as a temporary inconvenience, despite the fact that the country has been suffering for several years from fuel shortages and breakdowns in thermoelectric plants, which have plunged Cubans into long days of blackouts. The official, however, presents it as a solved problem: “We were able to confront this crisis and take corrective measures.” This Tuesday, the Electric Union announced an energy deficit of 1,318 megawatts.
She also defended the actions of the island’s authorities, who did everything possible to ensure that travelers remained unaffected by the difficulties caused by the total blackout. “When this situation made it difficult to serve customers, they were transferred to other hotels where they were provided with complete recreational facilities,” she explained, which helped to ensure that no tourist itinerary was cancelled.
Authorities did everything possible to ensure that travelers remained oblivious to the difficulties caused by the total blackout
For the high season, which coincides with winter on the Island, Galindo said that the hotels have backup generators – the same ones that kept all the tourist establishments operating while Cuba was completely shut down for more than three days – which “guarantees the maintenance of the viability of tourist services.”
Galino also referred to the particular concerns of Russian tourists, such as the ability to pay in rubles through Mir cards. “We have not had any imbalance in transactions with the Russian market and with the markets of other countries,” she said.
As if the official’s words were not enough, the Russian agency also interviewed Konstantin Dudkin, head of the Varadero department of the Moscow-based travel company Pegas Touristik. The manager’s response did not disappoint the official line: “Based on some of the global problems that Cuba has experienced in the past, the Administration, the Government and the Ministry of Tourism have taken the necessary measures to provide everything required in a time of extreme uncertainty and to keep the tourism sector afloat.”
Dudkin added that the regime guaranteed hotel services by filling water tanks, refueling generators and transporting tourists to other facilities – all tasks that involve the use of fuel that the state had always told the population it did not possess.
The director of the tourist agency even defended the island’s government by speaking about the United States embargo
The director of the tourist agency even defended the island’s government, speaking about the US embargo and the unwillingness of some countries to assist Cuba. “We must bear in mind that we are not on the continent, where borders are open and these problems can be quickly resolved,” she explained, adding: “It is clear how difficult it is for them to do certain things, unlike other countries. I think everything was done at the right level. In my opinion, they tried to resolve all the problems that arose. It worked exceptionally well. Our company’s operations were not affected by this situation,” she concluded.
“As Artur Muradyan, vice-president of the Association of Tour Operators of Russia (Ator) for international tourism and general director of the Space Travel tour operator, told TASS earlier, the situation with the power outage in Cuba had virtually no impact on Russian tourists. Ator also reported that there were no mass cancellations of tours to Cuba due to a large-scale power outage there,” the news agency concluded.
In an interview with Tass a few days earlier, Galindo said that the Russian market was on the rise and that the number of travelers from that destination who had arrived on the Island in 2024 was 8% higher than in 2023. The official even estimated that “if there are enough planes that can fly such long distances, then in the last two months of the year” there could be more than 200,000 Russian travelers.
The overall numbers do not match the regime’s expectations of reaching 3.2 million travelers this year
While it is true that Russia has positioned itself as the country that sends the third most tourists to the Island, the overall numbers do not match the Cuban regime’s expectations of reaching 3.2 million travelers this year. As of September 1, 1,608,078 foreigners had arrived, 58,920 fewer than the same period in 2023, and expectations could not be worse, especially for a regime that has invested everything in this sector. Cuba’s main source of tourists, Canada, fell in August, with a cumulative total of 665,871, 1.5% less than the same month of the previous year.
With destinations that are better equipped and cheaper in the region, such as the Dominican Republic, Cuba is becoming an increasingly unattractive option for travelers. François Laramée, a Quebec travel agent who was in Varadero during the blackout, gave an interview to the LCN network where he could not have been more blunt. “It was pathetic,” he said, and concluded: “Even in a five-star hotel, it was catastrophic.”

An insight into China’s high-tech development and its implications

A major article published on Bloomberg at the end of last month provides a detailed analysis of the US high-tech economic war against China, and draws the conclusion, as indicated in the headline, that “US efforts to contain [Chinese president] Xi’s push for tech supremacy are faltering.”Chinese President Xi Jinping [AP Photo/Maxim Shemetov]The consequences, as indicated in the article at least to some extent, are that the US drive against China will assume ever more aggressive forms, bringing the prospect of war even closer. The article began by noting that “at a glance” the US campaign appeared to be successful given that Chinese tech giants had been cut off from access to the highest level of chip making capacity. This was because the US has been successful in pressuring the Dutch firm ASML into refusing to supply China with its “one-of-a-kind” machines necessary to make the most advanced chips. But deeper research showed that despite export controls and financial sanctions China was making “steady progress” in developing the industries of the future and that the Made in China 2025 program launched a decade ago by Xi, “has largely been a success.”“Of 13 key technologies tracked by Bloomberg researchers, China has achieved a global leadership in five of them and is catching up fast in seven others.”The article cited comments by Adam Posen, president of the Washington-based think tank, the Institute for International Economics, who said: “China’s technological rise will not be stymied, and might not even be slowed, by US restrictions.” The only exception would be “draconian ones” that slow the pace of innovation in the US and globally. It pointed to the vast transformation that has taken place over the past three decades in the very structure of the world economy, noting that China’s “manufactured goods trade surplus is the largest relative to global GDP since the US right after World War II.” China had taken the lead in the making of electric vehicles (EVs), batteries and solar panels. The battle would continue whoever won the White House in the presidential election with the US focused on trying to prevent China from catching up in the manufacture of cutting-edge chips. It is not confined to the economic sphere. As the article continued: “For policymakers in Washington and Beijing, the push to win the technology race is driven by a number of considerations, including a desire to drive development, create jobs and secure supply chains. But officials in both capitals say another factor is playing a bigger role in economic policy these days: Preparation for a potential war, even if one isn’t imminent or planned.”On the US side, it cited remarks by US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan in a major speech in 2022 in which he outlined a series of areas, including semiconductors, clean energy and biotech, in which he said the US would seek to “maintain as large of a lead as possible.”Sullivan said export controls, which have increasingly been used by the Biden administration, going well beyond the tariffs and other measures introduced during the Trump presidency, were a “new strategic asset” that would be used to impose costs on adversaries and “degrade their battlefield capabilities.”In their official statements, Chinese authorities pursue a different tack. They insist they are seeking to uphold the international free trade order which the US is in the process of upending. But they know that US strategic planning is not only directed at trade but involves war in which the US would seek to cut off vital supplies of raw materials, particularly energy and so are seeking to develop Chinese capacity in alternative energy sources. This means, the article noted, that “the possibility of an all-out conflict means China has no intention of degrading its manufacturing power, despite US demands that Xi’s government reduce overcapacity and rebalance the economy more towards consumption.”There is no doubt the US bans on the export of the most developed computer chips and highly complex chip-making equipment is having an impact. But the analysis said that despite this “China continued to climb the ladder of manufacturing dominance and technological advance” and that if the US wanted to win the competition it would need to “run faster or try harder to trip China.”This portends ever increasing economic warfare. But at a certain point this will develop into the increased use of military methods. This is because, as Shen Meng, a director at the Beijing investment bank Chanson, told the researchers while “the efforts to contain China worked in the short term” in the long run “China will find ways to circumvent this containment.”This is not idle speculation but is reflected in the case of the Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei. In 2019 the Trump administration put a ban on the company denying it access to advanced chips necessary for its mobile phones and its sales slumped. But it poured money into research and development and worked with domestic suppliers to develop a more advanced chip which the US considered would not be possible. While the Chinese developed chip is not top of the range, according to the article: “Huawei’s smartphone business has since recovered and is now challenging Apple.”Paul Triolo, an analyst at a Washington-based advisory firm said that while Huawei’s AI chips were not as advanced as those produced by Apple and Nvidia “they are capable enough for many applications.”He said China had made “major progress” towards manufacturing without the use of US tools, but this process would be slow and challenging “as the US continues to ratchet up controls targeting both tool makers and front-end manufacturing facilities.”It may be slow but there is no denying the direction of development. Goldman Sachs has estimated that China could lift its chip self-sufficiency to 40 percent by 2023, nearly double its present level. Even though this development may not yet be top of the range it will provoke an even more aggressive response from the US.The development of Chinese high-tech, and the increasingly bellicose response of the US towards it, underscores the utterly reactionary character of the nation-state system in which the capitalist system is rooted and the historic necessity for its abolition by the international working class in the struggle to take political power and establish socialism.High-tech development, which like every other advance in the productive forces, is not the product of one nation but is a global product, involving the labour of workers, scientists, engineers, programmers etc, drawn from all over the world. It contains the potential for a tremendous advance in social conditions and living standards for the world’s people. But so long as this contradiction, between its global scope and the division of the world by the nation-state system, remains, this very development brings ever-closer the danger of world war and the destruction of civilisation as the major imperialist powers seek to resolve it by establishing themselves as the dominant force. The World Socialist Web Site is the voice of the working class and the leadership of the international socialist movement. Is Moon Knight Season 2 Cancelled? New Movie Rumors Explained

A viral social post has fans thinking Moon Knight Season 2 may be canceled. It has been several years since Oscar Isaac’s Moon Knight was last seen. The character debuted as a part of his Disney+ series in March 2022, but a Season 2 of Moon Knight has still not been greenlit, despite “conversations” having reportedly been had on the subject. In the years since Moon Knight’s end, only one single appearance from the hero has been confirmed for a future MCU project, which is part of the upcoming What If…? Season 3. Is Moon Knight Season 2 in Doubt?
Moon KnightFans are convinced that Moon Knight Season 2 may never come thanks to some misinformation circulating online. Speculation on the MCU series’ sophomore effort stems from a viral Facebook post claiming that Season 2 of Moon Knight has been canceled and is instead being pursued as a now-in-development movie. None of these claims have been substantiated in any way and seem to be inauthentic. However, that has not stopped the posts from grabbing hold of fans eager to hear more from Oscar Isaac’s hooded hero. While not a Moon Knight movie outright, it has recently been reported that Marvel Studios may be starting work on a Midnight Sons movie (via Daniel Richtman).Moon Knight is a member of the longtime comic book team on the page, so one would assume that he, along with characters like Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange, would be a part of the movie version as well. Moon Knight Season 2 has never been officially announced, but fans have long assumed one would come, seeing as the character was introduced in his own show only to not be seen or heard from again since. Will Moon Knight Season 2 Ever Happen? One would assume with a star like Oscar Isaac attached to a hero like Moon Knight, the character would be primed for a long and fruitful run in the MCU. That, at least so far, has not been the case. Moon Knight showrunner Mohamed Diab told Deadline in October 2024 that “with Marvel, nothing is called finished” when asked about a potential Season 2, but he made it very clear nothing has been confirmed for any sort of follow-up. He continued, saying, “Right now, nothing is in talks,” but he would “love to be involved in anything:””You never know – with Marvel, nothing is called finished. There could be a film, or he could go into another universe. Right now, nothing is in talks, but definitely, with Moon Knight, I would love to be involved in anything else, and it could happen for sure. I have a great relationship with them.”The character has been confirmed to appear in the upcoming third season of the animated anthology What If…?, so it is not as though he has been completely forgotten in the hallowed halls of Marvel studios. Surely, there is a plan for Oscar Isaac’s Moon Knight; fans may just have to wait to eventually get there. Shortly after Moon Knight Season 1, Diab previously remarked that “[Marvel has] a plan.”Whether that plan remains intact to this day remains to be seen, but it should be reassuring for fans to know that Moon Knight is likely still top of mind for the Marvel Studios creative brain trust. That is all to say, while nothing has been confirmed, there is always a chance that Moon Knight comes back for a Season 2 somewhere down the line. Moon Knight is now streaming on Disney+.

‘Diary of a Wimpy Kid’ author speaks at the Overture Center, celebrates launch of new book ‘Hot Mess’

The Wisconsin Book Festival collaborated with the Children’s Theater of Madison on Nov. 2, 2024, to host the international bestselling author of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series Jeff Kinney to commemorate the release of the newest book in the series, “Hot Mess.”
“Hot Mess” was released Oct. 22, 2024, and is available at most major bookstores and online.
The event was hosted at the Overture Center for the Arts and ran from 6-7 p.m. Kinney said it brought together over 1,000 people with registration closing weeks in advance due to it reaching maximum occupancy.Advertisements

Upon entry, guests were given a free copy of “Hot Mess” and a drawing pad. The drawing pads contained numbers that would later be used in the event’s participatory activities.
The event started with a “Diary of the Wimpy Kid”-themed quiz, where four young participants competed to answer the most number of questions. Kinney was introduced alongside a tape showcasing his global travels as a writer.
Throughout the event, Kinney shared his creative process and the journey of his writing.
Kinney spoke about the book’s title which is (partially) a reference to the 2024 American Presidential Election. He later discussed the process he usually takes to write his books.

According to his oration, he begins by first writing the title and designing a cover, a process that usually takes months. But, “Hot Mess” would provide an exemption ending up as an expedited instance.
Kinney also said the cover and title of the books precede their contents, which he starts by writing jokes.
His process of joke-writing takes Kinney around three months per book and requires a period of isolation to design the gags in his stories. They are written on an old-fashioned computer without internet access due to his attention-deficit disorder.
In recent years, Kinney has found his local cemetery a comforting place to write.
The artistic process begins with sketches, inkings and then the lining of his drawings which he prefers to start with color before transitioning to the black-and-white style frequent in his books.
After his initial discussion of The Diary of the Wimpy Kid’s creative process, Kinney hosted a series of activities centered around his ‘opening’ of an Italian restaurant, Gregario’s. Participants were chosen based on the numbers on their sketch cards accompanying the copies of “Hot Mess.”
The various challenges at the event included participants competing or collaborating in activities relating to the theme of opening a restaurant. The activities took place with the assistance of some children’s parents and the usage of various restaurant-related props.
During the series of activities, three singers from the Children’s Theater of Madison performed for the audience. Kinney concluded the event by thanking the crowd and encouraging them to “keep having fun.”

Japan’s MUFG hires Raphael Charon to grow direct lending business in EMEA

LONDON : Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group (MUFG) has appointed former Fidelity International banker Raphael Charon as head of middle market direct lending for MUFG in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, the bank said on Tuesday, as it looks to expand in one of banking’s hottest areas, private credit.Charon will be tasked with helping the Japanese bank’s private equity clients with their direct lending to mid-market companies, as MUFG grows its wider business with such clients. The bank’s direct lending team will focus on deals in Britain as well as Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg, a spokesperson for the bank said, targeting deals worth around 20-40 million euros ($22-43 million).Direct lending is a key part of private credit, an industry which has boomed in recent years as financial companies outside the banking sector face fewer regulatory hurdles than traditional lenders, although ratings agencies have warned of the risks from the industry’s opacity.Banks are battling back in this market, with Goldman Sachs in May saying it raised $20 billion via its asset management arm for such deals.MUFG like its domestic rivals is seeking to expand its international business, as higher interest rates in those markets inflate profits when earnings from abroad are brought home.($1 = 0.9200 euros)
