TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) – For the past 21 years, Brenda Wenrich has helped North Topeka bloom at Heaven Scent Flowers and Tuxedos.
“I bought it as a flower shop,” Wenrich said. “That gentleman‘s wife had passed away and he didn’t really have an interest in doing it.”
Just like that, her florist journey began.
“I didn’t know a tulip from a turnip back then and now I do and now I love it,” Wenrich said. “All the staff at that time taught me, I didn’t go to floral school.”
Her favorite arrangements to create are for funerals.
“There’s something to be said about giving that last thing for somebody,” Wenrich said. “I want stuff to be beautiful.”
People are the sunshine that made her bouquets brighter.
“All I care about is making people happy, it’s the last thing you can do for somebody and the best thing you can do for anyone,” Wenrich said.
But as of Nov. 22nd, she’ll be closing to welcome in another female small business owner from Topeka.
“She came to me and wanted my building because it fits her needs with the coolers and all that good stuff,” Wenrich said. “So I thought if the price is right why not?”
Wenrich says the 85-year-old building is used to changes.
“It went through the big flood in Topeka,” Wenrich said. “It’s been many things I’ve had people come in here for years and go ‘I had my first date here’. It was built to be a serve ice cream.”
Now as she passes the baton, she gives this advice to all small business owners.
“To make something profitable, you have to spend money to make money,” Wenrich said. “Do your homework and just plan on working a lot and if its not something you love, you will be successful.”
Wenrich plans to continue to impact the community as a para or assistant to the elderly.
