The city’s study illustrates the economic impacts of tourism in one of Virginia’s top destinations.
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — A recent study shows tourists spent more money in Virginia Beach in 2023, boosting the local economy and lowering costs for families throughout the city.
More than 14 million people visited Virginia Beach last year — and spent, on average, $7 million each day, according to the study by the Virginia Beach Convention & Visitors Bureau.
Overall, visitors poured a staggering $2.5 billion into the city’s economy in 2023, continuing a three-year trend of growing visitor spending. Food and beverage sales alone generated more than $1.1 billion. Lodging, which includes traditional stays and short-term rentals, brought in $678 million.
“Our recent economic impact study underscores the incredible appeal of Virginia Beach as a travel destination,” said Nancy Helman, Virginia Beach Convention and Visitors Bureau director. “Welcoming 14.1 million visitors and generating $3.8 billion in economic impact is a testament to the diverse experiences we offer and the hard work of our tourism industry. This growth not only enhances our local economy, but also strengthens our community as a whole.”
Tourism remains a vital element to economic growth in Virginia Beach. The industry continues to employ more than 30,000 people, accounting for 19% of the city’s workforce.
Even further, visitor spending contributed $336 million in state and local tax revenues, lowering the annual tax burden for each household in Virginia Beach by more than $1,800.
“These findings illustrate not just the vitality of our tourism sector, but also the deep connections our visitors have with Virginia Beach,” Helman added. “As more people choose to visit our beloved city and for those lucky enough to call Virginia Beach home, we’re seeing a direct impact on our local economy.”
