Is Netflix removing Black Mirror’s Bandersnatch? The most unique genre on the streamer plans to leave the platform sooner than we think.
What could be better than kicking back to watch Netflix? Actually getting to choose what the main character decides to go with in the flick. However, Netflix doesn’t see the benefit in keeping them on the streamer. Here’s why.
Netflix is on the Move to Take Down Their Interactive Films and Shows
The streaming giant has found success in producing interactive titles ever since the release of 2017’s Puss in Book: Trapped in an Epic Tale and Black Mirror’s Bandersnatch back in 2018.
Netflix’s Interactive Specials boasts 24 titles which include Boss Baby: Get That Baby and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: Kimmy vs. the Reverend, to mention a few.
However, as of December 1, the streamer plans on removing most of their interactive titles from their list. According to a report by The Verge, Netflix is looking to utilize its technology in alternative ways.
“The technology served its purpose, but is now limiting as we focus on technological efforts in other areas,” spokesperson Chrissy Kelleher said.
Apparently, delisting these interactive titles followed suit after former Netflix gaming boss Mike Verdue announced he’s the Vice President of “GenAI for Games” at Netflix and confirmed the removals with Game File.
“We’re not building those specific experiences anymore,” Verdu explained, “The technology was very limiting and the potential for what we could do in that realm was kind of capped. But we learned a ton from that.”
But is Netflix Removing Black Mirror’s Bandersnatch, Though?
Of the 24 interactive titles, Black Mirror’s Bandersnatch is not going to be a part of the Netflix removal. Only four will be staying on the streamer.
The three other titles include Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: Kimmy vs. the Reverend, Ranveer vs. Wild with Bear Grylls, and You vs. Wild.
While it remains to be seen if Netflix does plan on halting interactive stories, Verdu’s words leave hope for some time in the future, sharing that their new goal is to make the new content “feel more and more like you really are playing the show.”
He added that the phenomenal experience from Bandersnatch helped them “learn a ton” on what improvements they plan on bringing to the table.
