A Spanish tourist who became lost in the Colombian Amazon jungle managed to survive after consuming just two things.
After setting out on a guided tour of the beauty spot at the end of last month, Esther Jiménez Romeu became separated from her guide when she became stuck underneath the treacherous undergrowth underfoot.
Having to manoeuvre through the weather-impacted terrain during their two-day search for the tourist, the authorities finally managed to locate the exhausted 26-year-old.
Delighted by the news that the Spaniard had now been found, Álvaro Mendoza, a volunteer from the Civil Defence confirmed that the young woman had managed to survive on just water and oats, he said: “She collected all the rainwater and was sustaining herself on oats with a little water; that was her diet. Despite everything, she had the strength to get out of there.”

Hardly able to hold back her emotions after being discovered, the 26-year-old said: “I am happy to be back thanks to all the community that has been helping me (…) I didn’t think they would arrive so quickly; they are a wonderful team.”
To make Esther’s story even more staggering, it was also revealed that her discovery was only made possible after she had managed to make contact with a friend in Norway, before they then alerted authorities in Colombia.
The local Mayor’s Office offered his thanks to authorities for their recovery mission after Esther had finally been found, saying: “Thanks to the tireless work of the relief agencies, we have managed to locate the Spanish tourist who was missing in the Amazon jungle’, reads the document.”
While there was jubilance at the news of Esther being brought back to safety, the search still remains ongoing for the missing tour guide, Horacio Santana Flórez.
