Tamil superstar Kamal Haasan holds a special love for Malayalam cinema and Kerala audiences and the ‘Indian’ actor has also created a special place in the hearts of Malayalam audiences with his stunning portrayal of characters in several Mollywood films such as ‘Eeta’, ‘Madanolsavam’ and many more. Earlier, Kamal Haasan posed an insightful question on why the classic Malayalam movie ‘Chemmeen’ was not considered as a pan-Indian movie when it hit the big screens in the year 1965.
During an interview with Manorama Online, Kamal Haasan said that everything has been done and dusted in the Malayalam cinema. He asked, “Why was ‘Chemmeen’ not called a Pan-Indian film? We watched the movie in theatres without any subtitles and saw it in the real Malayalam version.”
Kamal said that the majority of the Indians have seen ‘Chemmeen’ and appreciated it. The ‘Vikram’ actor said, “Pan-India is a phenomenon that happened in the Malayalam film industry a long time ago.”
Talking about big projects like ‘RRR’, and ‘Baahubali’, Kamal Haasan said that those movies are in discussion due to their success, and when a Malayalam movie also turns out to be a success, it will be also celebrated, indicating that the term ‘Pan-India’ is not the criteria to define a film industry’s potential.
On the work front, Kamal Haasan’s previous outing was with Shankar’s directorial action drama movie ‘Indian 2’. Unfortunately, the movie received criticisms from the audiences majorly due to its over-the-top action sequences and the plot which is underwhelming compared to the first part of the film.
Looking ahead, Kamal Haasan has the most awaited Mani Ratnam’s directorial ‘Thug Life’ in the pipeline.
