Born in a Brahmin family, Haasan was initially named after the Parthasarathy deity at Pallava-era temple in Chennai. Later his father changed his name to Kamal Haasan. Talking about his father’s influence on his life, Kamal Haasan once said, “I didn’t know the purpose of my birth, but it’s almost like he knew the purpose of my birth that he mentored and guided me. When he was asked why I was allowed to go into the field of arts and cinema instead of becoming an IAS officer, my father replied that I could become an artist first and then an IAS officer. He asked me to follow my path and guided me with his love as a father.”

Haasan was immensely influenced by his father D. Srinivasan who was a lawyer by profession and was also involved in arts and culture, which had a significant impact on Kamal’s exposure to creativity. His mother, Rajalakshmi Srinivasan, was a homemaker who encouraged his passion for the arts from an early age.
Haasan grew up with three siblings

Haasan had three siblings — Charuhasan, Chandrahasan and Nalini (Raghu) and he is the youngest of all. His other brother, Chandra Haasan, was a well-known actor and producer, who was also involved in the Tamil film industry. He passed away at the age of 82 due to a massive cardiac arrest. Following this, Haasan and actress, Sarika fell in love and started living together in 1988. They married after their first child, Shruti Haasan, was born in 1986.
