Malaysians planning to travel to the United Kingdom will soon be required to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) starting 8 Jan 2025. This new requirements applies to all foreign visitors, including children, who don’t currently require a visa for short stays in the UK. This ETA serves as a digital travel permit for visitors seeking short stays in the UK, distinct from a traditional UK visa.

Streamlined border security and a digital future

This new move aligns with similar border security measures implemented by other countries like the United States and Australia. The British High Commission emphasises that the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system will contribute to a more streamlined and secure digital immigration process, benefiting the millions of travellers entering the UK yearly.
Cost, validity, and application process
Each Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) will cost £10 (~RM56.64), allowing multiple entries to the UK for stays up to six months per visit, spread over a two-year period or until the passport holder’s passport expires (whichever comes first).

Malaysian travellers can start applying for their ETA in advance from 27 Nov 2024 onwards. Applications can be submitted through either the UK ETA app or the official UK government website.
