Yingling recognized by local, state officials
Longtime Franklin Regional school board member Herb Yingling was recently recognized with a citation from the Pennsylvania House of Representatives as well as a proclamation from Murrysville Mayor Regis Synan declaring Sept. 27, 2024, “Herb Yingling Day.”
Yingling is an FR graduate and served for 34 years as a volunteer in the district’s athletics department, in addition to 23 years as a school board member. He is also a member of the FR Panther Foundation.
Leukemia & Lymphoma Society seeks ‘student visionaries’
The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is seeking participants for its Student Visionaries of the Year program, where local student teams undergo a seven-week leadership program to raise awareness and funding for blood cancer patients and their families and build professional skills.
Teams are tasked with organizing fundraisers and other events for the benefit of the society.

Used book sale
The American Association of University Women will host their annual fall used book sale at the Murrysville Community Library.
It will be from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Nov. 14-16 at the library, 4130 Sardis Road in Murrysville.
A flat-bottom brown paper grocery bag full of books will be priced at $15 on Nov. 14, $10 on Nov. 15 and $5 on Nov. 16.
The selection includes books for readers of all ages as well as individually priced adult and children’s puzzles.
Veterans Day 5K fundraiser
The Franklin Regional girls’ lacrosse team will host a Nov. 9 5K run/walk to benefit the team.
It will be at 9:30 a.m. along the Westmoreland Heritage Trail. Check-in starts at 9 a.m. at the Murrysville Community Center at 3091 Carson Avenue. The cost is $10 for adults and $5 for children.

Cantata concert
On Nov. 17 at 4 p.m. the Murrysville Cantata Choir will present “A Patriotic Thanksgiving,” its annual concert celebrating Thanksgiving and Veterans Day, at First Presbyterian Church, 3202 North Hills Road in Murrysville.
Several sacred anthems of thanksgiving will be part of the program, as well as patriotic anthems, including a medley of the songs of the various branches of service. First Presbyterian’s Rev. Edward Gray will present a meditation, and at the conclusion of the concert the audience will be invited to participate in singing the closing selection, “The Old Hundredth Psalm Tune” by Ralph Vaughan Williams, with the accompaniment of organ, trumpet and timpani.
The Murrysville Cantata Choir, now in its seventh season, brings together choral singers from the area. The group is sponsored by First Presbyterian Church and in addition to its November concerts also performs a Lenten/Easter cantata in the spring.
There is no cost to attend, however, donations are gratefully accepted.

Organizers for the annual Delmont Pilgrimage and Pilgrimage Jr. are seeking volunteers for both speaking and non-speaking roles, bus guides, path guides, costume preparation, cooking baking and more.

Members of Trail Life USA Troop 2417 are accepting sponsorships for wreaths to be laid on veterans’ graves at Murrysville Cemetery during National Wreaths Across America Day, which is Dec. 14.

‘Chem in a Flash’
The Murrysville Recreation Department will host Mad Science’s “Chem in a Flash” program on Nov. 12 for children in kindergarten through fifth grade.
It will be from 9 a.m. to noon in the Murrysville Community Center at 3091 Carson Avenue. Participants will see a variety of chemical reactions and have a chance to perform some hands-on experiments. The cost is $45.
