It’s Christmas time so we are going to see Christmas content rise up the ranks on streaming services. What’s that, it’s not Christmas time? Well, then explain to me how Time Cut was just dethroned by “Meet Me Next Christmas” on Netflix’s top 10 list. Checkmate.
Time Cut, the truly awful time-travelling horror movie, ended its run at #1, unseated by that new Netflix original Christmas film. It very much does look like one of those 1,000 low-budget Christmas movies a bunch of channels pump out every year and Netflix has always wanted in on that game. Here’s the premise of Meet Me Next Christmas:
“In pursuit of a fairytale romance with the man of her dreams, Layla must race through New York City to get her hands on the hottest ticket in town: the sold out Pentatonix Christmas Eve Concert.”
So uh, Jingle All The Way but with Pentatonix tickets? And in case you are unaware, Pentatonix is a very real a cappella group well known for their Christmas performances, and there is zero question they’ll show up to sing in the film, obviously.
The film stars Christina Milian and Devale Ellis and does not appear to have enough critic reviews for an actual Rotten Tomatoes score. Of the five that exist, four are positive, so hey, not bad.
Netflix has indeed been doing this whole Christmas original movie thing for a while. One of the more prominent examples was when they brought Lindsay Lohan back to screens in 2022 for Falling for Christmas, which did quite well on the service. There are…a lot of these, actually.
Given that Meet Me Next Christmas is launching now, a week after Halloween with just under two months until the actual holiday, it’s clear that Netflix is about to rapid fire these off over the next few weeks as people search for Christmas content on the service. They don’t make that many Thanksgiving movies, I guess.
As for Time Cut, the film ended at a 28% critic score and 32% audience score. It’s not clear if it was ever meant to have a sequel, but it’s a horror movie, so I’m going to say there’s probably at least a 60% chance it gets one, no matter how bad it was. But it would have to balance the schedule of the Netflix stars, Antonia Gentry and Madison Bailey, that make up its cast, as they’ll be busy with Ginny and Georgia and Outer Banks, respectively.
I can’t say I’m going to watch Meet Me Next Christmas, as if I’m watching a Christmas movie, it’s going to be Elf, but we’ll see how long it can last on top.
