Saturday Night—Jason Reitman’s movie comedy about the chaotic 90 minutes before the first episode of Saturday Night Live—is coming soon to digital streaming.
Saturday Night debuted in wide release in theaters on October 11. Directed by Reitman and written by Gil Kenan and Reitman, the official logline for Saturday Night reads, “At 11:30 p.m. on October 11th, 1975, a ferocious troupe of young comedians and writers changed television forever. Find out what happened behind the scenes in the 90 minutes leading up to the first broadcast of Saturday Night Live.”
The film stars Gabrielle Labelle as SNL producer Lorne Michaels, Matt Wood as John Belushi, Cory Michael Smith as Chevy Chase, Ella Hunt as Gilda Radner, Dylan O’Brien as Dan Aykroyd, Lamore Morris as Garrett Morris, Emily Fairn as Lorraine Newman and Kim Matula as Jane Curtin.
According to When to Stream, Saturday Night is expected to debut on digital streaming via premium video on demand on Tuesday, November 12.
While the streaming tracker is typically accurate with its reports, When to Stream noted that Saturday Night’s studio Sony Pictures Entertainment has not announced or confirmed the release date of the film and it is subject to change.
Saturday Night is available for pre-order on PVOD on such digital platforms as Prime Video, AppleTV and VUDU for $24.99, which is the film’s purchase price.
Digital rental prices generally run $5 less than the purchase price, so viewers can expect to rent Saturday Night on PVOD for $19.99 for a 48-hour period.
How Did Audiences And Critics Receive ‘Saturday Night’?
Per The Numbers, Saturday Night has earned $9.3 million in North American theaters to date and just over $100,000 internationally for a worldwide box office tally of $9.4 million.
Deadline reported that Saturday Night had a $30 million production budget before prints and advertising costs.
Rotten Tomatoes critics collectively gave Saturday Night a 77% “fresh” rating based on 198 reviews. The RT Critics Consensus reads, “Jazzed up by an excellent ensemble that captures the essence if not the exact likeness of SNL’s original cast and crew, Saturday Night is a frenetic and nostalgic celebration of one of showbiz’s most auspicious debuts.”
The film also received an 84% “fresh RT Audience Score based on 500-plus verified user ratings. The Audience summary reads, “An all-access pass to the chaos and minutiae behind the scenes, this account of the premiere that changed the history of television honors the talent who brought you: Live from New York, it’s Saturday Night!”
Saturday Night also stars Rachel Sennott, J.K. Simmons, Willem Dafoe and Nicholas Braun.
Rated R, Saturday Night is expected to debut on PVOD on November 12.
