Santo Domingo.- In a coordinated effort to elevate safety and efficiency in Bayahibe, the principal departure point for excursions to Saona Island, authorities and private sector leaders have agreed to implement concrete actions aimed at enhancing the region’s tourism and maritime operations.
During a strategic meeting that brought together representatives from the Dominican Republic Navy, Ministry of Tourism, National Environmental Protection Service (SENPA), Central Directorate of Tourism Police (POLITUR), National Drug Control Directorate (DNCD), as well as the Public Prosecutor’s Office, the National Association of Hotels and Tourism (ASONAHORES), and leading Bayahibe tour operators, participants reached a consensus on enforcing tighter controls.
These measures seek to protect and preserve coastal marine resources while ensuring the sustainable growth of tourism in Bayahibe and its surrounding areas.
One of the primary outcomes of the meeting was the establishment of a joint working group to better organize the area, safeguard the environment, and bring all stakeholders into regulatory compliance. This coordinated approach aims to ensure that commercial and maritime operations meet stringent safety standards.
As part of this initiative, the Dominican Navy announced stricter enforcement of the prohibition against boat repair and painting within 60 meters of the high tide line, in accordance with Law 305-68 and Law 64-00. This measure underscores the commitment to preserving Bayahibe’s pristine coastal environment.
Bayahibe’s role as the main gateway for Saona Island excursions makes it one of the Dominican Republic’s top tourist attractions, drawing an estimated one million visitors annually, which represents 18% of tourist activity at national attractions.
Additionally, authorities agreed to bolster inter-agency efforts to ensure that all tour operations have the proper permits and authorizations from the Ministry of Tourism (MITUR), Ministry of Environment (MIMARENA) and Dominican Navy.
Both public institutions and private sector representatives reiterated their commitment to these jointly developed measures, emphasizing their shared dedication to fostering safe tourism practices, environmental protection, and the sustainable development of Bayahibe’s coastal areas.
