AP PHOTOS: Once-traditional camel trading fair in India transformed into tourist attraction

PUSHKAR, India (AP) — ++++ FOR MOVEMENT ON FRIDAY, NOV. 15, AT 0200 GMT. Frank G. edited. Yan prepping photos. ++++It’s early morning in Pushkar, a city at the edge of the Thar desert in the northwestern Indian state of Rajasthan, and a herd of about a dozen camels led by two men is returning, raising a golden sand cloud. The camels had been out grazing in the night at the foothills of the ancient Aravali mountain range, and their handlers spent the night out in the open. For the next two hours or so, when the heat is still bearable, prospective buyers will look for bargains among hundreds of camels that have been brought to be sold by herders and farmers from surrounding districts. Many camels wear necklaces made with a string of small round bells and have brightly colored plastic flowers on their snouts and heads. Specialized barbers walk around trimming camel hair for a fee to make them look more attractive to buyers.

Some herders have walked with their animals for two weeks or more on paved roads and scrub land to reach the annual fair.Camels were once the most important animals used for transportation in the desert. Even though paved roads and vehicles have made them largely irrelevant, they are still being used in some remote parts of the state.

Hitched to a wooden cart, they can be seen transporting people and construction materials. Some are still in use by farmers selling fresh vegetable produce to townsfolk. Herders supplement their diet with camel milk, make blankets with camel hair and use camel dung as cooking fuel.

Even though fewer camels are being traded now, the state government has worked to turn the fair into a big tourist attraction. On the large sandy plain where the fair is held, large Ferris wheels are installed and dozens of stalls are set up to sell local handicrafts. Men with impressive moustaches compete for a prize, and tourists are encouraged to take selfies with them.

Children wear traditional costumes, play string instruments and carry on their heads replicas of vessels used by women to fetch water as they enact rural scenes and mingle with the crowd presenting live tableaux.Everything is carefully choreographed for the tourists.Thousands of tourists from around the world now enjoy camel rides, watch cultural shows, and get to participate in rural sports contests and play a game of cricket watched by a bustling crowd. Hindu devotees visiting the fair can take a dip in the holy Pushkar Lake, situated about 2 kilometers (1¼ miles) from the site of the fair and visit a number of old temples dotting the city of Pushkar.

Caught on camera: Thief steals company work truck from SA business owner

“He didn’t just take a truck, he took a dream,” said Owner/Operator of Ecotopia Pest Control Steve Martin.

SAN ANTONIO — Heartbreak on the southeast-side of San Antonio as a pest control business is left without a way to service its customers.

Early Tuesday morning, the company’s only work truck was stolen.

“He doesn’t realize what he did. He didn’t just take a truck, he took a dream,” said Steve Martin, Owner/Operator of Ecotopia Pest Control.

Martin woke up to a nightmare Tuesday morning after his work truck was stolen a neighborhood on Blue Oak Pass, near southeast Military Drive.

“I look on the camera and I see this guy simply go to my truck and take off with my life, my everything, everything I worked for you just took it,” said Martin.

Martin says his truck was locked but the suspect was able to get into the truck and drive away in 30 seconds. Martin says police told him that the suspect may have had a master key.

“For someone to just take it from you, everything you ever worked for, it’s not right and people don’t understand what it takes to get things,” said Martin.

Martin says he runs a one-man operation, alongside his wife. Martin uses the truck to run his business and it was filled with all the equipment and products he needs to service customers.

Martin says the business is his only source of income and the theft has caused him to reschedule appointments.

The truck is a 2007 white Dodge Ram, with the green Ecotopia Logo on both sides of the doors. If you see the truck, you’re urged to call San Antonio Police.

“To get the truck back would mean the continuation of my dream. To get a truck back would be the opportunity to provide a better future,” said Martin. “You know, I come from nothing. I was homeless for two years at one point. I had to do it the hard way.”

From Side Gig to 6-Figure Success — How I Built a Thriving Home-Based Business as a Busy Family Man

Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own.
On a warm July day in 2014, I received a Facebook message from a former classmate. She asked me whether I’d be interested in translating for a local website she was working at. I didn’t think too much of it at the time, but I gladly accepted, eager to earn my first bit of online income. That “gig” barely lasted three months, and I made less than $1,000. But that was the catalyst for me sitting here today, having made over $17,000,000 for clients around the world and bringing in multiple six figures for myself, all while barely leaving my kitchen. Not only that, but I get to plan my days around making memories with my amazing wife and my beautiful 15-month-old daughter. Before I tell you how I can live such a comfortable life, let’s look at my struggles because it wasn’t all sunshine and roses, especially in the first two years of my freelance career.

Overcoming the early hurdlesAfter the translation gig, I took a three-month in-house position in China, helping the company expand links with diplomatic missions. While I loved traveling and exploring the Middle Kingdom, I didn’t love being back in an office. So, three months later, after I came back home, I created my first website, a travel and lifestyle blog. While it never made me more than $500 per year, it served as a portfolio when I was applying for content writing jobs on Facebook job boards.Six months after creating the website and trying to compete with hundreds of others for every freelance gig I could find, I was able to secure a somewhat steady gig with a local online entrepreneur. That same guy later called me “The best copywriter in Bulgaria.”

Whether he was right or not, it didn’t matter. His statement gave me an enormous boost to my confidence. We even became good friends. One thing led to another, and two years after our first meeting, we launched an Initial Coin Offering (ICO).The project didn’t pan out as I expected, but I gained a ton of valuable experience. I was responsible for everything related to marketing — social media content, email marketing and landing page copy. I helped with the branding, led a team of content writers, and even provided some customer support.Around the same time, I also made my first $1,000 in a month just by writing copy. Things started to improve, but they were still slow.Related: These 3 Side Hustles Make the Most Money While Working Fewer Hours, According to a New Survey

The power of investing in your growthAfter a much more successful 2018, I finally gained enough money to invest in my growth. That’s why in 2019, I spent £1,000 ($1,300) on a copywriting course from a guy I’d been following for a couple of years. In 2020, I invested in his group coaching program, which I’m still a member of. On top of that, I joined a paid mastermind and bought another course on how to write high-converting sales pages.By the end of the year, I had invested close to $2,000 every month in coaching, mentorship, and courses. That allowed me to have my first five-figure month in 2021 and 7.5 times my income from 2020 to 2022. The truth was, had I invested in mentorship earlier, I’d have probably achieved those results much faster.Related: 7 Ways to Maximize Mentor Relationships in BusinessFive essential tips for running a 6-figure business from anywhere in the worldNowadays, I regularly earn five-figure months, I choose whom to partner with, and I can work from any spot on the planet provided it has Wi-Fi. This allows me to help my wife take care of my 15-month-old daughter while having an amazing lifestyle where we aren’t tied to any location.

However, it took me over five years to reach this level, and I could have never made it this far without a few things I did.So, if you’d also like to run a six-figure business while enjoying the freedom and flexibility of working from home, the following tips will be helpful. Imagine being able to take a long lunch break to hit the gym or meet a friend for coffee, knowing you can catch up on work later in the day. Want to take a spontaneous weekend getaway? As long as you have your laptop and a reliable internet connection, you can work from anywhere in the world.Let’s dive into the tips.Be consistentI don’t know any successful person who isn’t consistent in what they’re doing. For example, I’ve been posting on my Facebook wall almost daily since 2014. And I’ve been working out pretty much non-stop since 2012. These two things have helped me keep a positive mindset and build my personal brand consistently over time.

Related: Why Consistency Is the Key To Success, Learn From These EntrepreneursDon’t focus on the money. Focus on the craftWay too many people focus only on making money. This is putting the cart before the horse. Money is a byproduct of your skills. If you’re not good, no one will pay you to do work for them. But when you get good, money comes easily.Get a mentorThere’s no faster way to grow in any career than getting a mentor or a coach. Learning from their mistakes so you don’t make the same ones and following their expert advice can dramatically speed up your progress. And while it usually comes with a hefty price tag, every single cent invested in your personal development is worth it.Trust the processAs a freelancer, you’ll inevitably face the dreaded “feast-and-famine” cycles. Don’t fight them; embrace them. They’re part of the process. They help you grow faster, provided you learn the lessons from each period. Because if you don’t? You’re doomed to repeat those same mistakes.

Never get comfortableMany folks make the critical mistake of getting comfortable. That’s when they stop investing in coaching. They stop buying courses. And they become confident they know it all.Sadly, that’s also when things can easily go south. So, if you’d like to avoid such unpleasant situations, always be curious and open to learning new things.Bottom lineThese were the things that helped me build a consistent six-figure business I can run from anywhere in the world. I don’t have any employees, I work less than 5-6 hours per day, and I don’t even have a virtual assistant (VA).So, if you’d like to achieve similar results, follow the five tips I shared above.

Newham Leads UK in Small Business Growth, Showcasing East London’s Entrepreneurial Spirit

Newham Leads UK in Small Business Growth, Showcasing East London’s Entrepreneurial SpiritNewham in East London has emerged as the fastest-growing area in the UK for small business creation, with a 175% rise in new firms established since 2010. This rapid growth highlights East London’s position as a thriving hub for ambitious entrepreneurs and business leaders, according to a new report by the East London Growth Group.
East London: A Hotbed for Entrepreneurial Growth
The report reveals that Newham saw the number of businesses rise from 4,840 in 2010 to 13,290 today, a remarkable increase driven by the area’s young, dynamic workforce and supportive environment for business. Seven of the top ten fastest-growing local authorities for new businesses are in London, with Salford, Luton, and Manchester also making the list. Howard Dawber, Deputy Mayor of London for Business and Growth, applauded the area’s “entrepreneurial spirit,” pointing to the high concentration of new ventures as evidence of East London’s growing economic potential.
This trend aligns with demographic shifts in East London, which has welcomed 325,000 new residents, with over a third of them between the ages of 25 and 49—a prime age group for entrepreneurial activity.
Calls for Improved Infrastructure and Housing Support
Despite its rapid growth, the report stresses that Newham and other East London areas need more support in terms of affordable housing and transport. The influx of new businesses and residents requires an infrastructure that can sustain this growth.
Alison FitzGerald, CEO of London City Airport, emphasized the need for a cohesive approach to support the region’s momentum. “This insightful report shows that East London is one of the best places in the UK to start and grow a business. The priority now is to work as a group to identify clear solutions for how we can capitalise on this momentum and unlock more opportunities for East London.”

The East London Growth Group is advocating for policies that address these infrastructure challenges, aiming to enhance the appeal of East London for emerging businesses and talent alike.
Optimism for East London’s Future in Business
Local leaders are enthusiastic about Newham’s future as a business hub. Sir Stephen Timms, MP for East Ham, expressed pride in the area’s success. “I am delighted that Newham has been identified in this research as the most entrepreneurial place in the country. People who live in the borough—many with roots in other parts of the world—respond to the challenges they face with energy, imagination, and determination,” he said. “This research finding provides good grounds for optimism about the future.”
As East London’s reputation for business development strengthens, Newham and surrounding areas are poised to continue attracting ambitious entrepreneurs who bring creativity, drive, and resilience to the region. With continued support for infrastructure and affordable housing, East London could become an even greater powerhouse for UK business growth.

Tom Hardy’s Splinter Cell Movie Is Officially Dead (Exclusive)

Splinter Cell is an iconic game franchise, one that fans have been hoping to see unfold in live-action on the big screen–though, sadly, that doesn’t look to be happening anymore. The story follows a black-ops super spy named Sam Fisher working for the fictional agency “Third Echelon” under the NSA. The first entry landed in 2002 as an Xbox-exclusive title and has gone on to create seven different games. The film adaptation was officially reported to be in development by Deadline in 2012, with it being revealed later that year that Tom Hardy was in talks to star as Sam Fisher himself. In 2014, Edge of Tomorrow director Doug Liman was announced as the director of the film, which was being produced by Ubisoft and New Regency as an edgy PG-13 action filck. There had been multiple updates throughout the 2010s regarding filming timetables, but every single one of those had missed their marks. For years, there’s been no further word on the status of the long-gestating Splinter Cell movie.Splinter Cell Movie Is No Longer Happening
UbisoftWhile promoting the tenth anniversary of John Wick, producer Basil Iwanyk, who signed on to produce the Splinter Cell film in 2013, confirmed that the previously announced live-action theatrical adaptation is now dead.According to Iwanyk, the Tom Hardy-led movie is not happening anymore, as they “couldn’t get it right:””‘That movie would have been awesome… Just couldn’t get it right, script-wise, budget-wise. But it was going to be great. We had a million different versions of it, but it was going to be hardcore and awesome. That’s one of the ones that got away, which is really sad.”The news that the Splinter Cell live-action adaptation was canceled is certainly going to break the hearts of fans worldwide. While it doesn’t mean there won’t ever be a movie, the wait for the hypothetical film just got exponentially longer. In the meantime, fans can also look forward to Netflix’s animated series Splinter Cell: Deathwatch. The project, which stars Liev Schreiber, is set to drop at some point in 2025 and “offers a sharp new take on modern espionage in the hybrid-war era.”On the gaming side of the equation, sadly, there’s been no word on a proper sequel in the works for a long while now. At the very least, a remake of the original game is in development (and isn’t canceled, despite what rumors claimed).

Growth is tourism industry’s destination

A walk along Wukang and Anfu roads in Shanghai’s Xuhui district offers a glimpse of the city’s culture and landscape. The combination of historical architecture with well-designed cafes and shops draws numerous tourists, making it the trendiest place for a stroll.
This is no coincidence. Both the authorities and the community have cooperated to combine cultural preservation with contemporary vitality, striking a balance with tourism. This approach has also benefited residents by improving infrastructure and public services.
It’s one of China’s successful examples of developing communities through sustainable tourism, which was among the key topics at the World Tourism Alliance’s Xianghu Dialogue 2024, recently held in Sanya, Hainan province, under the theme of “geared up for a new venture — the future is now”.
Representatives from international organizations, tourism authorities, cities, companies and travel agencies from 32 countries and regions gathered for the discussions. These included trends in the global market and tourism between China and Europe.

“The tourism industry has become an emerging strategic pillar industry, promoting both livelihood and happiness,” says Zhang Xu, chair of the World Tourism Alliance. The annual conference acts as a platform for the global tourism industry to communicate and enhance cooperation.
According to UN Tourism, formerly known as UNWTO, a leading international organization in the field of tourism, the number of tourists traveling internationally had almost returned to pre-pandemic levels in the first seven months of 2024, driven by robust demand in Europe, and the reopening of markets in Asia and the Pacific.
Jaime Mayaki, director of the Department for Technical Cooperation and Silk Road at the UN Tourism, identifies trends in the global tourism industry, including regenerative tourism, wellness tourism, sustainable development and the use of artificial intelligence.
“In community-based tourism, we should ensure that local residents benefit from tourism and preserve their culture as well,” he says. “Also, the numbers of digital nomads (those who travel and work remotely) are increasing globally, and destinations should offer them the necessary infrastructure, such as reliable internet.”
He believes that tourism plays a vital role in terms of driving job creation, economic development, cultural exchange, environmental conservation and poverty reduction.
“Sharing best practices among countries is important for global tourism cooperation,” he says. “China excels in using technologies like AI in creating personalized experiences. It can share its popular digital payments, virtual reality and augmented reality practices.”
