Suriya’s Kanguva released in theatres on Thursday, and one of the main complaints that the audience had on the film is its extremely loud soundscape. The film is a period action drama, naturally had more exaggerated soundscape, and given it was boosted by the theatre experience, many felt that the film became jarringly noisy. The latest to react to this is Indian sound designer and Academy Award winner Resul Pookutty.
Resul Pookutty reacts to Kanguva’s loud soundscape
Kanguva was one of the much-anticipated Tamil films this year. After years in the making, the film finally hit the big screens on Thursday. However, the nearly two years wait for Suriya did not provide entirely satisfactory, as scores of fans who watched the film walked with a headache. The reason being the film’s loud soundscape. Many audiences who watched Kanguva complained that the film was boisterously loud, among the many other shortcomings.
The latest to comment on the issue is Indian sound designer Resul Pookutty, who shared a post on Instagram. He wrote, “A friend of mine, a re-recording mixer send me this clip… It is disheartening to see a review about sound in our popular films like this. Our craft and artistry caught up in the loudness war.. who is to blame!? The sound guy?! or the innumerable fixes comes at the last moment to satiate all insecurities. High time our fraternity to put their foot down and say thing loud and clear. No film will have a repeat value if the audience walk out with head ache!”
Kanguva mocked for loud volume
The high volume in which Kanguva is shot became one of the talking points to criticise the film. The loud dialogues, over-the-top background score and excessive volume of the film, did not sit well with the audience.
Kanguva is directed by Siva and has Suriya play the lead role. The film is produced by Studio Green, and also stars Bobby Deol and Disha Patani.
