After an 10-year hiatus, Cameron Diaz is gearing up to reclaim her place on the red carpet.
Diaz will make her hotly-anticipated return to acting alongside Jamie Foxx in the Netflix comedy “Back in Action,” due out Jan. 17.
The film’s first teaser trailer, unveiled Thursday, follows two former CIA agents who have turned their backs on their profession for a life of married domesticity. The pair soon discover that old habits die hard when they’re thrust back into the world of espionage through a series of hair-raising events. The film’s cast also includes Kyle Chandler, Glenn Close and Andrew Scott.
“Back in Action” is Diaz’s first film role since her portrayal of Miss Hannigan in the 2014 adaptation of “Annie,” which also starred Foxx. She formally announced her Hollywood retirement in 2018, and has since welcomed two children with musician Benji Madden, her husband of nine years.
Foxx confirmed Diaz’s “Back in Action” casting in June 2022 by sharing a cheeky recording of a three-way chat between the two actors and NFL superstar Tom Brady, who had announced his retirement from professional football that year only to rejoin the Tampa Bay Buccaneers just 40 days later.
“Cameron is such an incredible force and she has done so much in this business,” Foxx later told “Entertainment Tonight” in an interview. “We love her. We had to be very innovative in how we, you know, brought her back.”
Production on “Back in Action,” however, hit a major snag last year when Foxx was hospitalized following an unexpected “medical complication.” The actor has yet to disclose specifics of his condition.
Diaz addressed her decision to step away from acting while appearing at a women’s empowerment event last year.
“It felt like the right thing for me, to reclaim my own life, and I just really didn’t care about anything else,” she said. “I think it really comes to, what are you passionate about? For me, it was to build my family.”
