Central Alberta businesses are being called on to contribute their know-how to a new economic development initiative.
A coalition of business, governments, learning institutions and service agencies have joined forces to form Central Alberta First, which is aimed at supporting existing business while attracting new investment and talent.
Business Retention Expansion and Workforce Development (BREWD) is being rolled out as Phase 1 of a broader strategy called Next Generation Economy Initiative.
“It’s really important that business owners have the chance to be heard and play a meaningful role in shaping how we grow our economy,” said Sandra Blyth, economic development officer for Town of Olds and Invest Olds.
“Our focus is on making sure the ideas generated by our business community are supported by action,” said Blyth. “We’re forming partnerships now that will ensure the solutions we develop are sustainable and effective.”
Business input is essential to ensuring decisions and plans reflect what regional businesses are experiencing.
“This is a chance to create solutions that reflect the unique needs of central Alberta,” said Penhold Mayor Mike Yargeau. “By bringing together perspectives from across the region we can develop a practical plan that helps businesses of all sizes grow and succeed.”
Other municipalities who have joined Central Alberta First include Red Deer, Red Deer County, Kneehill County and Mountain View County.
“This isn’t just about identifying challenges,” said Innisfail economic development officer John Powell. “It’s about working together to develop solutions and having the right partners in place to support the implementation of those solutions.”
Central Alberta First is hoping to gather input from business owners, manager and entrepreneurs from all sectors and industries.
Kneehill County Reeve said the initiative offers businesses an opportunity to influence how the regional economy grows and evolves. The new organization wants to hear about the challenges facing businesses, the opportunities available and what kind of support would make a difference for businesses.
Business Information Sessions are being held in Kneehill County and Penhold on Monday, Innisfail on Tuesday and Red Deer on Wednesday. For information go to www.centralalbertafirst.ca
