Thumbs up. The First Amendment at work: About 30 Lathrop High School students walked out of school Wednesday to protest the policies of President-elect Donald Trump. The protest was met mostly with positive support from the Fairbanks community — not so much for the topic of the protest but rather that the students were expressing their First Amendment right to do so. Social media being what it is, however, allowed for a few disparaging comments to bubble forth, ranging from calling a peaceful protest “deviant behavior” to calls for the students to be expelled. The only deviant thing that really took place was a lone chucklehead driving through the parking lot shouting homophobic slurs at the students, but that’s the beauty of the First Amendment. Even chuckleheads have a First Amendment right to out themselves as a chucklehead. Whether you like what the students were protesting, the enthusiasm of young Americans peacefully assembling is a nod to our republic no matter what side of the aisle you are on.
Thumbs up. Anyone hit bingo?: Sen. Lisa Murkowksi is channeling the voice of (most of) the people. “This one was not on my bingo card,” Alaska’s senior senator said of President-elect Trump nominating firebrand congressman and provocateur Matt Gaetz of Florida for attorney general. The comment — prefaced with “We need to have a serious attorney general. And I’m looking forward to the opportunity to consider somebody that is serious.” — was a viral moment for the senator with the soundbite getting global attention. And you’re right, senator. We certainly didn’t have that on our bingo card either.
