Neighbors in South Burlington are hoping some new developments lead to a business boom on Shelburne Road.What used to be a Denny’s, will now be the home of Dominos.”I think it’s a moving place to be right now. We have a lot of new opportunities coming here and we’re excited to be a part of it” said Stefan Radan, owner of Dominos.Radan’s family brought the well-known pizza chain to Vermont in 1967. They are currently set up on Farrell Street, a short drive off Shelburne Road. He says they could not pass up on the opportunity to relocate.”The moment the old iconic Denny’s building came up for sale, it was a no brainer for us to be right in the heart of Shelburne Road” said Radan.Just up the street lies an abandoned Pizza Hut, there are two plans in the works for this property. New tenants are hoping to tear it down and set up residential buildings. The decision now lies with the property owner.”We get lots of questions about the former Pizza Hut property” said Paul Conner, director of zoning and planning in the city. “The property owner is working through different paths between approvals at the local level and some elements that they have been appealing”.People who live in the area hope this is the start of a major economic boost in the city.”My girlfriend is pumped because she is a big Dominos fan. We were sad that Denny’s left because it was nice last second breakfast spot. It will be exciting to get a new restaurant in and not just have an empty building” said South Burlington resident Austin Comes.Meanwhile, some are a little anxious of the potential traffic increase on the already bumper-to-bumper road. “Some businesses are still not up and running. If more come, we will see more traffic” said resident Ahmed Hassen.City leaders say they are working with Green Mountain Transit to make navigating Shelburne Road easier as these new developments start to take shape, by strengthening the transit network with multiple bicycle and pedestrian projects in the works.For updates on new happenings, the city says you can stay up to date on the South Burlington city website.
