A British expat living in Tenerife has sent out a serious message to tourists considering the Canary Island as their winter getaway. With over a decade on the sun-drenched island, TikTok user @theknightstrider1 highlights a significant issue every winter: pickpocketing.
Unlike mainland Spain, where winter sees a lull, Tenerife’s appeal grows, drawing not just tourists but also criminal groups intent on theft. In a recent video, he outlines how these thieves operate with professionalism, focusing on easy targets among the crowds at popular spots like the golden mile and market days.
He offers advice saying, “They are very good at it, and they will do pickpocketing. They will steal from cars if you leave stuff inside them, so please do be very careful with your wallets, and stuff like that.”
Reinforcing his point, he adds, “If you’re down here, busy, the golden mile area, the Sunday markets, the Tuesday markets, all of that – those busy areas – people bumping into you, just be careful. Just like at home, we do have pickpockets around.”
The seasoned Tenerife resident also shares a personal tip for keeping belongings safe: “I normally just take my little wallet out, and I have it in my front pocket. Just be very careful and aware. You’ll be absolutely fine if you are but, unfortunately, so many people switch off, and they have their wallet busting with cash hanging out of their back pocket.”, reports the Mirror.
He disclosed that pickpockets are astonishingly quick, attacking when you’re unsuspecting. He also warns drivers to keep valuables out of sight in their cars, as these are a common target for thieves who often look for items like cameras and iPads; such belongings should neither be unsecured nor easily visible.
He mentioned lately that there’s an increase in reports of tourists being victims of theft. His video triggered numerous reactions online.
One comment humorously suggested: “I genuinely was expecting you to say bring a coat.”
Some reflected warmly on their past visits, with a remark: “Never had an issue over there. Can’t wait to go back in December.”
Nonetheless, not everyone is eager to revisit, as one person said: “I don’t know what is going on in Tenerife. I know it’s not just Tenerife, but the vibe is off. I don’t think I would go back, and I’m not alone in that.”
Another expressed safety concerns: “Such a shame. Always come in the winter, but noticed it’s definitely getting worse. Just don’t feel safe in the evening.”
