A Brit who swapped the UK for sunny Tenerife has issued a stark warning to fellow tourists flocking to the destination this winter.
The Canary Island, which is popular for those seeking winter sun, may be a slice of paradise, but visitors are being urged to stay vigilant. TikTok user @theknightstrider1, who’s called Tenerife home for over 10 years, warns a particular problem plagues the island every winter season.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, the issue is pickpocketing. Unlike mainland Spain, which quiets down in winter, Tenerife’s tourist trade booms, attracting criminal gangs who “fly in” with the sole purpose of thieving from holidaymakers, treating it like a “full-time job”.
In the clip, he explained: “They are very good at it, and they will do pickpocketing. They will steal from cars if you leave stuff inside them, so please do be very careful with your wallets, and stuff like that.”
He continued: “If you’re down here, busy, the golden mile area, the Sunday markets, the Tuesday markets, all of that – those busy areas – people bumping into you, just be careful. Just like at home, we do have pickpockets around.
“I normally just take my little wallet out, and I have it in my front pocket. Just be very careful and aware. You’ll be absolutely fine if you are but, unfortunately, so many people switch off, and they have their wallet busting with cash hanging out of their back pocket.”
He reveals pickpockets can be alarmingly swift, swooping in for the steal when you least expect it. For those thinking they’re safer behind the wheel, he brings another word of caution – never leave items visible in your car, as they often target these objects.
They look for expensive electronics such as cameras and iPads, which should not be left unsecured or in plain sight. Recently he said he’s heard “more and more” reports of holidaymakers being targeted.
The video sparked a flurry of comments online. One user playfully noted: “I genuinely was expecting you to say bring a coat.”
Others reminisced fondly about their travels, with one writing: “Never had an issue over there. Can’t wait to go back in December.”
Not everyone is keen to return though, as another added: “I don’t know what is going on in Tenerife. I know it’s not just Tenerife, but the vibe is off. I don’t think I would go back, and I’m not alone in that.”
One more person chimed in with: “Such a shame. Always come in the winter, but noticed it’s definitely getting worse. Just don’t feel safe in the evening.”
