A British expat who relocated to Tenerife issued a warning to tourists visiting the popular winter sun destination.
Although Tenerife is a beautiful place to visit, it’s essential to be vigilant, especially during the winter months. According to @theknightstrider1 on TikTok, who has lived in Tenerife for 10 years, a particular problem arises every winter that tourists should be aware of.
The issue, according to the local, is the prevalence of pickpockets. Unlike other areas of Spain, which tend to be quieter during the winter, the Canary Islands experience a surge in activity, making it a prime target for thieves.
He warned many of the culprits are gangs who travel to the area specifically to target tourists, and they do so as a “full-time job”. As a result, they are skilled at scamming people and stealing valuables.
In his video, he advised: “They are very good at it, and they will do pickpocketing. They will steal from cars if you leave stuff inside them, so please do be very careful with your wallets, and stuff like that.
“If you’re down here, busy, the golden mile area, the Sunday markets, the Tuesday markets, all of that – those busy areas – people bumping into you, just be careful. Just like at home, we do have pickpockets around.
“I normally just take my little wallet out, and I have it in my front pocket. Just be very careful and aware. You’ll be absolutely fine if you are but, unfortunately, so many people switch off, and they have their wallet busting with cash hanging out of their back pocket.”
According to the local, pickpockets can be “so quick” to snatch them when you’re not paying attention, which is why vigilance is key. He also mentioned cars are a target when valuables are visible, advising never to leave items on show.
He warned gadgets such as cameras and iPads are particularly attractive to thieves, and underscored the increasing number of stories about people being victimised, emphasising the importance of staying alert.
Since the video was posted online, it has attracted over 1,000 views, with many people sharing their thoughts. It appears a significant number of Brits are planning trips there this winter.
One commenter joked: “I genuinely was expecting you to say bring a coat.” Another shared their positive experience, writing: “Never had an issue over there. Can’t wait to go back in December.”
However, a third wasn’t impressed, adding: “I don’t know what is going on in Tenerife. I know it’s not just Tenerife, but the vibe is off. I don’t think I would go back, and I’m not alone in that.”
A fourth also chimed in with: “Such a shame. Always come in the winter, but noticed it’s definitely getting worse. Just don’t feel safe in the evening.”
