You do not already need a driver’s license to obtain a REAL ID-compliant card. Those without an existing driver’s license can obtain a state-issued ID card that will prove their identity without having to go through the process of obtaining a driver’s license. Meanwhile, those who already have a driver’s license can upgrade their current driver’s license to one that is REAL ID-compliant.If you are planning on flying in 2025 past the May deadline, children under the age of 18 will not have to obtain a REAL ID card to fly on a plane so long as they are traveling with an adult companion who does have the identification card.To obtain a REAL ID card, applicants will need to bring documents along with them to their local BMV or KTC office that prove the following:Full legal nameDate of birthLegal presence in the U.S.Social Security numberStreet address — TWO documents from different sourcesProof of name change (if applicable)Non-REAL ID-compliant cards will still be acceptable for all other uses within the tristate area, such as buying alcohol, tobacco, gambling, playing the lottery or voting.More information about obtaining a REAL ID card can be found here.
