The Friends of the Elyria Public Library System-Keystone LaGrange Branch is currently hosting the 13th annual book sale at the LaGrange Village Hall, 301 Liberty St. through Nov. 17.
The annual sale features thousands of books, both new and used, and other entertainment and hobby material for a major discount.
All material is donated and nothing costs more than $1, according to the Friends president Wendi Zwaduk.
“We get whatever is donated, some of them are new,” she said. “Most of the books are used, some of them are from the library.”
Zwaduk said around 16,000 books fill the tables this year, while other items for sale include quilting and sewing patterns, DVDs, CDs, records, audio books, games and puzzles. Books are divided into categories, with a large children’s selection, and the Friends are hosting a basket raffles containing baskets with donated items.
“It’s great, it’s been great,” said Zwaduk.
The Friends has instilled donation sites around town including at LaGrange Café, LaGrange IGA, First Baptist Church, LaGrange Global Methodist Church, the Village Hall, and the library itself.
According to Zwaduk, while the Village Building and library collect donations all year, most other sites collect primarily between March 1 and Oct. 31.
“There are times where I haven’t been able to promote it as much as I want to, and we still get donations,” she said. “It’s a big job to hold the event but worth it to see people reading, encourage their love of reading and to help the library and community thrive.”
As an organization, the Friends of the EPLS – Keystone LaGrange Branch help support programming, events and over needs for the library, said Zwaduk.
Events and fundraisers like the book sale help ensure the library can afford to make necessary upgrades, purchase items and continue programming, primarily the summer reading program.
“It feels good to see books in hands and know that it helps fund the library programs,” Zwaduk said.
“It’s great to see the money staying in the community.”
Hours for the event are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 16 and noon to 4 p.m. Nov. 17; the event is cash or check only and admission is free to all.
Nov. 17 is known as “Bag Day” where guests can purchase two bags for $5 each and fill them as full as they wish with items, Zwaduk said.
“It’s been great because people really do come out for this,” she said. “When people come out, they come out.”
