The simple, meaningful story and very good illustrations make “An Anishinaabe Christmas” a good picture book to share with a child.

Rachel Friedman is happy. Not only does she have two weeks off school for the holidays, but the first night of Hanukkah is tomorrow! Rachel and her friend, Maya, decide to come up with a list of eight awesome things to do for Hanukkah. Unfortunately, Rachel’s brother Aaron thinks he is too old for Hanukkah and then Maya gets sick. And things get even worse when Latke Night has to be postponed.
Wanting a fun Hanukkah, Rachel adds, getting Aaron to admit that Hanukkah is fun to her and Maya’s list. But this nice idea appears to be in jeopardy when Rachel accidentally causes Aaron to break his leg when they are skating.
Can Rachel overcome some holiday disappointments and have an enjoyable Hanukkah?
