New Grand Blanc Township police mental health initiative aims to understand, help community
No two days are the same for the new co-response crisis intervention team at the Grand Blanc Township Police Department.
One day, the two-person team could help a homeless veteran off the street and get them to shelter.
Another day, they could admit someone to Hurley Medical Center.
On another day, the pair could sit in on an intervention.
All three have already happened once for the GBTPD co-response team, which began their grant-funded work on Oct. 1.

‘The Fire Inside’ depicts Claressa Shields‘ journey to Olympic gold, equality for women boxers
When Claressa Shields and her family first watched “The Fire Inside,” her four-year-old niece, Suki, was so inspired that she looked to her aunt – the world’s greatest female boxer – and declared she’d be next.
“Her fire inside started burning,” Shields said.
A screening of the film complete with a red carpet included Shields, a two-time Olympic gold medalist and world titlist in five weight classes, actor Ryan Destiny, who plays Shields in the production, and director Rachel Morrison took place on Sunday, Nov. 10, at Cinemark Flint West 14 in Flint Township.
The film is set for release on Christmas Day.

What’s that? Savory bread aroma to begin drifting near Lapeer County campground
Otter Lake will soon welcome a new sourdough bread company, offering the community a fresh source for handmade bread.
The company plans to make sourdough loaves using basic, natural ingredients and a slow process giving the bread its unique tangy flavor and chewy texture.
Fostoria Bread Factory, located at 6415 Detroit St. near the Otter Lake Village Campground and the Southern Links Trailway, plans to bring back an old-school approach to bread-making, aiming to create loaves that are easy to digest and packed with flavor.

Flint schools to celebrate renovated STEM facilities with ribbon-cutting ceremonies
Flint Community Schools is set to unveil the newly renovated Brownell STEM Academy and Holmes STEM Middle School Academy, marking a pivotal step in enhancing the educational experience for Flint’s students.
Thanks to a $14 million grant from the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation and $26 million in federal ESSER (Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief) funds, the renovations represent a commitment to providing Flint students with high-quality educational facilities on the city’s north side.
These two schools now have the capacity to serve over 600 students, from six weeks through eighth grade.

Here’s what the Mott Community College Board of Trustees looks like after the election
Two new Mott Community College trustees will join the board in the new year.
The top three vote-getters in the Nov. 5 election included Candice Miller (14.85 percent of the vote), incumbent Jeffrey Swanson (11.92 percent) and Kenyetta Dotson (10.7 percent).
Each earned six-year terms on the Mott Community College Board of Trustees.

Sheriff patrols would continue in expanded area of Flint with Mott grant
Genesee County Sheriff’s Office deputies would continue to patrol a growing portion of Flint through at least May of next year under the terms of a new grant from the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation.
Commissioners gave initial approval to the $1.18-million grant for Operation Arrowhead during a committee meeting on Wednesday, Nov. 13, and could finalize the action when the board meets again next week.
