The United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) has recognized Gharb Suhayl and Abu Ghosoun, two picturesque villages in Egypt, as part of its prestigious list of the Best Tourism Villages 2024. These two communities were selected from a pool of 55 exceptional rural destinations, highlighting their contribution to sustainable tourism and cultural preservation.
This annual recognition program celebrates rural destinations that harness tourism as a catalyst for development, cultural preservation, and environmental sustainability. UNWTO Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili emphasized the initiative’s importance, stating:
“Tourism is a vital tool for inclusion, empowering rural communities to protect and value their rich cultural heritage while driving sustainable development.”
Now in its fourth edition, the initiative saw over 260 applications from more than 60 UNWTO member states. Of these, 55 villages were honored for their outstanding achievements, while an additional 20 villages were selected for a special upgrade program to enhance their tourism potential.
According to UNWTO, the Best Tourism Villages initiative underscores tourism’s transformative role in fostering inclusive growth and ensuring rural communities thrive. These villages stand as shining examples of how tourism can preserve cultural heritage, support local economies, and promote sustainability on a global scale.
