Indian Railways is upgrading its Vande Bharat train project to accommodate more passengers on long-distance routes. The coach count will increase from 16 to 24, allowing approximately 600 more passengers per train, making travel more affordable. This strategic move optimises operational costs without impacting the project’s timeline or budget.
Initially, 200 trains with 16 coaches were planned, but the revised agreement includes 133 trains with 24 coaches. Contracts for building sleeper trains have been adjusted, with CJSC Transmashholding and Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd delivering 80 trains (reduced from 120) and Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd delivering 53 trains (reduced from 80).
The additional coaches will spread operational costs over more passengers, reducing costs per passenger. Vande Bharat Express, launched in 2019, has three versions: chair car, sleeper, and metro. Trials for 10 trains with 16-coach configuration will begin soon, with passenger services expected by December 2024.
This upgrade reflects Indian Railways’ commitment to enhancing long-distance travel by optimising resources and offering comfortable, cost-effective options. The revised contract won’t impact the timeline or budget, ensuring continued rollout of modern trains across India.
