Gary Lewis has been a regular on our TV screens for many years, with the actor being best known for starring in shows such as Outlander and Vigil. The 66 year old, also known for appearing in films such as Billy Elliot and Gangs of New York, has began working on his latest acting project, having been spotted filming scenes in Cornwall in early November.
Gary was seen alongside Emma Thompson and Ruth Wilson as they filmed aboard a boat in Newquay on Monday (November 11). It’s believed the group were shooting scenes for an upcoming British TV series on Apple+, titled Down Cemetary Road. Filming began earlier this year for the upcoming project.
Emma and Ruth are due to take on the leading roles in the series, but it has not been confirmed that Gary is part of the cast. However, he was pictured in Cornwall shooting scenes, according to locals.
Gary, who hails from Easterhouse, Glasgow, became an actor at the age of 32 after completing a social science degree at Glasgow College of Technology. then joined the regular actors in Ken Loach films, after meeting fellow Scot Peter Mullan. He then bagged a role in Peter’s film Orphans, which led Gary to winning the Best Actor Award at the Gijón International Film Festival in 1998.
One of his most recognisable roles came in 2000, when Gary was cast as Jackie Elliot in the hit movie Billy Elliot. Following this, he starred in movies including Gangs of New York, Joyeux Noël and Eragon. He starred in Outlander from 2014 until 2016, becoming well known for his portrayal of Colum MacKenzie. His character died in the second season finale. He’s since appeared in Channel 4’s It’s a Sin, My Son and BBC drama Vigil.
Gary’s incredible acting talent was recognised by Glasgow Caledonian University in 2018, when the uni honoured him with an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Letters for his contribution to the TV and film industry.
Away from acting, Gary – whose real name is Gary Stevenson – tends to keep his personal life out of the spotlight and not much is known about his family. It is unknown if the actor is married, as he has never publicly disclosed the information since finding fame.
