Australian foreign exchange company, Travelex, has opened its first store in Hobart following an increased demand for both travel cash and pre-paid card from travellers.
Located in the Eastlands Shopping Centre, Tasmania’s largest shopping centre in the suburb of Rosny Park, the kiosk offers customers access to both 50 currencies in cash and Travelex pre-paid Travel Money Card.
Research from Travelex showed that Australian travellers are equally split when transacting with cash (52 per cent) and card (48 per cent) abroad. It also showed that those customers who purchase their travel money pre-trip are much more satisfied than those who buy cash at the airport, withdraw at their destination, or use credit cards abroad.
The Hobart store is Travelex’s second store in Tasmania, having operated a store in Launceston for over 20 years, and its 93rd overall in Australia. This year, the company has already opened 18 new stores and kiosks across Australia, including prime locations such as Melbourne, Sydney and Canberra.
According to the Australia Bureau of Statistics, the number of Australians travelling overseas on short trips reached pre-pandemic levels in January this year, and has risen by 32 per cent in the 2023-24 period compared with the previous year.
“We’re so excited to be establishing a store in Tasmania’s flagship retail destination,” Travelex managing director ANZ, Darren Brown, said. “We know that the happiest traveller is one who has both the flexibility of cash and card, and the opportunity to acquire their travel money in advance of their trip. Our Hobart store has been designed to offer just this service, offering Tasmanians even more convenient access to travel money than ever before.”
