A remake of the The Running Man is currently being filmed in Glasgow. And to the surprise of some city residents, the city needs to be made to look MORE dystopian.
In recent years, the dilapidated state of the city centre has been the source of huge anger and frustration while cutbacks by the SNP-run council and strikes have frequently seen rubbish piled up on the streets.
When recycling centres were closed during the pandemic, an unofficial rubbish dump under a motorway flyover made global headlines. And cleansing workers have been up in arms about the danger of rats lurking in piles of litter.
So when he spotted the crew from the remake of the Arnold Schwarzenegger action movie putting out more junk in a street in the city’s financial district, one person couldn’t believe his eyes.

Posting on X, Donald Erskine said: “In a rare twist for Glasgow – on the set of The Running Man, they are ADDING rubbish to a Glasgow street to make it look more dystopian.” He added: “They’re also having to ADD rain water”.
Arnie’s 1987 original is being remade by director Edgar Wright and stars Glen Powell, Josh Brolin, William H Macy and Michael Cera. It is based on a Stephen King novel about a TV show where convicted criminal “runners” must escape death at the hands of professional killers.
Leading man Powell, 36, is taking on the role of Ben Richards, who in the original film is a police helicopter pilot who is forced to take part in the show after refusing to open fire on starving food rioters.
It is set in a dystopian future version of the USA (the year 2017, in the 1987 movie, and the year 2025 in King’s novel) which has become a totalitarian police state following global economic collapse.
In the book, which was published under the name Richard Bachman, Richards is a desperate dad who enters the game show to get medicine for his daughter. He is portrayed as “scrawny” and according to King about “as far away from the Arnold Schwarzenegger character in the movie as you can get”.
