If you’re taking the kids to see a festive film in the cinema this weekend keep an ear out for a familiar voice, an accent which sounds very close to home. Opening in cinemas nationwide on Friday, November 22, The Magic Reindeer: Saving Santa’s Sleigh is the third release in the popular series of animated films which follow the exploits of Niko, a reindeer whose life’s ambition is to become a member of Santa’s Flying Forces.
Helping him in that task is a loyal group of friends, among them Wilma the weasel who is voiced by Wexford actor and singer, Aileen Mythen.
“I was delighted to get back to voicing this plucky character for the third in this series of films. She’s warm-hearted but street wise and always gives great advice’’ said Aileen. “It was very rewarding to finally see the film on screen after years in the making’’.
In his new adventure, flying reindeer Niko sets out to fulfil his dream to become a member of Santa’s Flying Forces. Just as he is about to make his sleigh-flying debut, his place on the team is challenged by super talented Stella. His dream shattered, Niko embarks on a thrilling adventure where he ultimately has to decide between trust and loyalty.
The movie was produced by Moetion Films which is based in the west of Ireland. It also features music from composer and Galway native Eímear Noone, and a script co-written by Galway-based Marteinn Thorisson
“As an animation company based in the west of Ireland, it’s a privilege to have our work distributed on such a global level, giving us the opportunity to showcase the excellence of Irish animation and talent worldwide,” said Moe Honan of Moetion Films.
Released last month in cinemas across Europe, the film is already making its mark at the European box office, with over 100,000 cinema admissions in Germany alone in the first week. It was also recently picked up by Viva Kids in North America and is set for a US release this Christmas.
Laura Prieto, VP acquisitions at US distributor Viva Kids, said, “We are so happy to continue our commitment to independent animation studios. The Magic Reindeer: Saving Santa’s Sleigh will bring joy and adventure to the entire family and we are thrilled to offer all audiences a new film to incorporate into their holiday traditions.”
Made with the support of Screen Ireland, RTÉ, section 481 tax credit, the film is the result of years of collaboration between European production companies Moetion Films Ireland, Animaker Finland, Ulysses Germany and A. Film Denmark.
