Though there’s never a shortage of festivals, markets and other cultural happenings in the Classic City, we’ve chosen to spotlight these events for the weekend of Nov. 22-24.
Each week, the Banner-Herald will publish a list of five options for things to do in the Athens area. Please note that the events in this list are subject to rescheduling, cancelation or tickets selling out.
Winter Wonderlights
- WHERE: State Botanical Garden of Georgia at UGA (2450 S. Milledge Ave.)
- WHEN: Sunday, Nov. 25 from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. ($15 admission, free for kids ages 4 and under)
- DETAILS: More than 63,000 visitors last year came out to experience the Bot Garden’s annual Winter Wonderlights show, which has to be seen to be believed. After this weekend’s opening, it will run on select evenings through Dec. 30. For tickets and parking information, visit botgarden.uga.edu/wonderlights.
Shop Small Crawl
- WHERE: Treehouse Kid and Craft (585 Barber St Studio G) and 20 others
- WHEN: Friday, Nov. 22 from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. (Free admission)
- DETAILS: Treehouse will serve as the hub for this holiday shopping event that supports 35 local women-owned businesses. Thanksgiving Book Fair
- WHERE: Books For Keeps Warehouse (420 Athena Dr.)
- WHEN: Saturday, Nov. 23 from noon to 5 p.m. (Free admission)
- DETAILS: With winter break coming up, Athens-based literacy nonprofit Books For Keeps is opening up their warehouse for parents and their children to come in and select a few books to take home and read over the holidays. Homy.Made food truck
- WHERE: Athentic Brewing Company (108 Park Ave.)
- WHEN: Friday, Nov. 22 from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. (Free admission)
- DETAILS: Informed by the food he ate in Mexico as a child, Homero “Homy” Castro’s approach to tacos, quesadillas, tortas and other menu items involves simple presentation, traditional flavors and a home made vibe. A table set up in front of the food truck allows customers to add veggies, condiments and extra spice.
Little Characters Fall Variety Show
- WHERE: Marigold Auditorium (373 N. Church St. in Winterville)
- WHEN: Saturday, Nov. 23 at 6 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 24 at 3 p.m. ($15 admission, free for kids age 4 and under)
- DETAILS: Little Characters theater troupe holds weekly after-school classes in Athens and Winterville for students ages 3 to 17, and the Fall Variety Show is where the students’ acting and film work will premiere in front of a public audience.
