Lennox Honychurch’s new book, *Resistance, Refuge, Revival: The Indigenous Kalinagos of Dominica*, was launched yesterday evening November 19, at the Alliance Francaise in Roseau. The event was attended by acting President Mrs. Josette Matthew and Mr. Matthew, along with a sizeable and engaged audience.
Dr. Honychurch delivered an enlightening presentation that highlighted key themes from the book, followed by a reception where attendees had the opportunity to purchase this significant work.
*Resistance, Refuge, Revival* serves as the first comprehensive history of the Kalinago people of Dominica. Dr. Honychurch, who holds expertise in history, anthropology, and archaeology, applied his extensive knowledge to this project. During his talk, he noted that Dominica is unique among Caribbean nations in that the Kalinago were able to retain a portion of their land despite colonial pressures. He detailed the evolution of Kalinago identities over time, from their initial resistance to European colonization, through their strategic withdrawals, to the establishment of the “Carib Reserve,” and culminating in a revival of traditions and respect in contemporary society.
“Resistance, Refuge, Revival” is a publication from Papillote Press, a company located in both Dominica and London. At the book launch, publisher Polly Pattullo introduced Dr. Honychurch, noting that this work stemmed from his doctoral research at the University of Oxford, which examined the material culture of the Kalinago people. Renowned for his comprehensive knowledge of Dominica’s history and culture, Dr. Honychurch also authored The Dominica Story, which is recognized as the island’s inaugural history. Additionally, his latest release, In the Forests of Freedom: the Fighting Maroons of Dominica, was published by Papillote Press in 2017.
