The Fijian Cup continued in full swing yesterday, as the second leg of the sports tournament kicked off with rugby sevens at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka.
The tournament marks the second leg of the sporting festival, which sought to celebrate the richness of sport in Fiji and help facilitate support for the sports contended at a grassroots level as well.
The organisers of the tournament, Tourism HQ along with Auckland Rugby had partnered with the Nadroga Rugby Union to facilitate the event.
Salamisa Batimala, spokesperson for the Nadroga union, expressed how honoured the sporting body felt in being given the chance to help officiate at the event.
“We are so blessed and honoured that we have Tourism HQ from New Zealand and also Auckland Rugby in this prestigious tournament that we’re having,” Batimala expressed.
Batimala highlighted the union was still developing its foray into the sevens game and saw the Fijian Cup as an avenue through which teams from the province were given a chance to showcase their talents.
With the event being a multi-faceted package appealing to tourists as well, he noted the tournament’s potential in injecting a monetary boost for the people of Sigatoka.
“We have tourism which is down at the moment, so its good to have these type of tournaments to boost the level of tourism coming into Sigatoka,” he said.
Four categories were playing in full force yesterday as 32 teams played in the open men’s, open women’s, under-85s and the legends category respectively.
Meanwhile, the competition will end today.
