Friday delivered an early taste of winter to the area, with rain, wet snow, brisk winds, and unseasonably chilly temperatures. In true early season fashion, elevation played a key role in determining accumulations, or lack thereof. Parts of the Poconos from Monroe to Pike County as well as the higher elevations of Sussex County in northwestern New Jersey saw near or over a foot of snow, with the highest elevations seeing the most. For most in the I-78 corridor through Berks, the Lehigh Valley, and North Jersey, it was conversational wet snow and scattered grassy coatings, but nothing more than nuisance winter weather as roads remained wet and not white. Look for a mix of sun and clouds both days this weekend with a brisk west to northwest wind and highs within a few degrees of the 50-degree mark, but the wind will add a chill. It’s a little milder early next week with mid 50s ahead of a cold front Monday and Tuesday, and nothing more than a few rain showers either side of sunrise Tuesday as the front passes. It turns colder the rest of the week towards Thanksgiving, and while it should be dry for the big travel day Wednesday, it looks unsettled for both Thanksgiving Day and Black Friday, with a mix of rain, sleet, and snow possible both days, and even colder weather following for the rest of the holiday weekend.
DETAILED FORECAST
THIS WEEKEND
We’ll largely dry things out for the coming weekend, but keep the gusty winds and chilly temperatures. Look for clouds to mix with some sunshine both days, with a brisk and blustery northwest wind around 15-20mph both days, with some higher gusts in there too. Highs will be in the upper 40s to around the 50-degree mark, but those winds will add a chill and make it feel colder. Overnight lows will be in the mid to upper 30s on Saturday night with partly to mostly cloudy skies.
MONDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY
We’ll see a weak cold front pass through early on Tuesday most likely, with nothing more than a few light and scattered rain showers out ahead of it late Monday night or early Tuesday morning. However, it will deliver a renewed shot of chiller air once it passes. So we’ll be on the milder side Monday and Tuesday, with highs in the low to mid 50s both days, with those gusty weekend breezes relaxing a bit on Monday, before kicking up a bit after our cold front passes Tuesday. For the big Thanksgiving travel day on Wednesday, it currently looks partly sunny, chilly, but dry with highs in the mid 40s.
THANKSGIVING DAY AND BLACK FRIDAY
Right now, the holiday weekend looks to start chilly and unsettled Thursday and Friday, and then turn even colder for Saturday and Sunday. One or two low pressures may ripple along a front to our south, with the chance of some rain and where it’s cold enough, some rain, sleet, and snow, Thanksgiving Day into Black Friday. Right now, it looks chilly, but not cold enough for snow everywhere. For now, since it’s still a week out, let’s play it as mostly cloudy with a chance of rain and snow both days, with higher elevation areas more likely to see snow, and areas farther south and lower in elevation seeing rain, or rain and snow.
