The movie that turned into a curse for filmmakers, bringing failure not just once but nine times, is Karz, which literally means “debt.”
Whenever a movie is gearing up for release, we often see stars and filmmakers seeking blessings for its success. At times, filmmakers turn to numerology for title suggestions, while others rely on their favourite ‘letters.’ However, the importance of a film’s title cannot be overstated. It is surprising, then, that despite this seemingly straightforward title being linked to three major flops in Bollywood, producers continue to revisit it.
This Movie is Bollywood’s Unluckiest Film
The movie that turned into a curse for filmmakers, bringing failure not just once but nine times, is Karz, which literally means “debt.” Across nine different films, this title seems to have brought misfortune. Surprisingly, all nine movies with this title ended up being major box office disasters. These include the 1980 classic Karz, the 2002 film Karz: The Burden of Truth, and the 2008 remake Karzzzz. The other six flops are Karz Tere Khoon Ka (1988), Doodh Ka Karz (1990), Pyar Ka Karz (1990), Karz Chukana Hai (1991), Mahaan Karz (1991), and the 2016 remake of Doodh Ka Karz.
The original Karz, helmed by Subhash Ghai and starring Rishi Kapoor, Neetu Kapoor, Simi Garewal, and Pran, went on to become a cult classic over time. However, despite its critical acclaim, it miserably failed at the box office, earning just Rs 4 crore. The failure of Karz affected Rishi Kapoor’s mental health and left him depressed and unsure of his career for a long time.
The 2008 remake, Karzzzz, featuring Himesh Reshammiya and Urmila Matondkar, was another failure. Made on a budget of Rs 24 crore, it managed to earn only Rs 16 crore. Reportedly, the film’s dismal performance was so severe that it left the producers on the brink of bankruptcy.
Sandwiched between these two films was Karz: The Burden of Truth, a 2002 release directed by Harry Baweja. Starring Sunny Deol, Suniel Shetty, and Shilpa Shetty, the movie grossed just Rs 15 crore at the box office and was met with harsh criticism from reviewers.
