Outlander’s leading duo, Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe, have discussed the possibility of returning to bring the 10th and yet-to-be-published book of the popular series to life.
While the Starz show based on Diana Gabaldon’s bestsellers is set to wrap up with its eighth season, there are currently nine books available, with a final instalment still in progress.
The saga of Claire and Jamie continued in the most recent novel, Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone, released in 2021, but the release date for the concluding book remains a mystery.
Fans, however, are revelling in the television adaptation, which has just resumed this week (November 22) with the latter half of its seventh season.
During a visit to The One Show, Heughan and Balfe were quizzed about the potential future of the Outlander universe, reports the Daily Record.
Presenter Anita Rani posed an exciting question from an eager fan: “If you were asked, let’s say, five years from now, to come back and do Outlander book 10 as a movie, would you do it?”
Balfe responded with a hint of intrigue: “Yeah, I mean never say never, right? I think if that was wanted we would always want to…”
Heughan agreed, adding: “If that’s what the fans want, how can we deny them? But yeah, we’ll see.”
To which presenter Jones chimed in: “There you are! It’s not over until it’s over.”
There’s been no official announcement on whether the 10th book in the series will be turned into a TV adaptation, and producers Maril Davis and Matthew B Roberts have indicated that season eight will conclude Claire and Jamie’s journey.
Despite this, fans remain hopeful that the saga might find a way to carry on in some capacity in the future.
In a conversation on The One Show, the lead actors shared details about their last scene together, which they described as “emotional”.
Heughan revealed it was “a seven and a half minute scene,” adding that it was filled with “lots of dialogue. And the dialogue, as in Outlander, normally these scenes are, it was very dramatic.”
He also mentioned: “A lot of goodbyes in the scene but then it had this double meaning because we were also saying goodbye ourselves.”
While fans may be preparing to bid farewell to the much-loved show, they can take solace in knowing that the story isn’t over just yet. The prequel spin-off, Outlander: Blood of My Blood, is set to continue the epic tale.
The new historical drama will explore two different time periods and delve into the backstory of Claire and Jamie’s parents.
And who knows? There might even be more time-travelling adventures to come. Stay tuned for its release next year to see what unfolds.
Outlander season seven part two premieres on Friday, November 22, on MGM+ via Prime Video in the UK and on Starz in the US.
