DENISON, Texas (KXII) – These aren’t cats, and they aren’t dogs, but they have just as much personality as any other pet.
“They’re actually really highly intelligent,” show owner Shawn Gray said. “There are some reptiles that are really good at problem solving.”
The HERPS Reptile Show travels around, connecting people with new best friends, and educating on ‘exotic pets.’
“We want to show that they’re not slimy, scaly creatures,” Gray said. “They can actually be really good pets for the right people, but you want to make sure that it is the right pet for you.”
Spoken to both first time and long time ‘exotic’ pet owners, the same advice can be heard from table to table: ask questions, research thoroughly, and know what you’re doing.
“We answer so many questions, and we’re more than happy to,” Abigail Tran with Jump’n Joe’s Spiders said. “We’d rather you do it the right way than do it the wrong way and get a bad experience.”
From lizards and snakes to turtles and even a micro zebra named Chloe, the show has a little bit of everything, for everyone.
“That’s big with us is making sure people are educated on how amazing these creatures really are,” Gray said. “For kids with allergies too, it’s also something to think about if they want a pet, you don’t have to worry about the allergens.”
The whole show is one big chance to learn — most importantly about what you need before bringing a scaled friend into the family.
“Don’t come in and buy an animal and then 2-3 days later decide oh I need to get a cage, I need to get food, that’s why the shows are good because you can get everything here.”
The show opened on Saturday, and will run again tomorrow from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Texoma Events Center.
