PERRY —In light of the holiday season, the City of Perry will host Small Business Saturday and a tree-lighting ceremony on Saturday, Nov. 30.
The tree-lighting ceremony will begin at 6 p.m.
Small Business Saturday was originally an initiative started by American Express 15 years ago.
“Small Business Saturday always falls on the Saturday following Thanksgiving, and everyone knows that Black Friday begins when you kick off all the sales for the shopping season,” Downtown Manager Alicia Hartley said. “Small Business Saturday is just that but for our locally owned businesses and retailers, so it’s an opportunity for us to highlight our business that are here in our community 365 days a year while reminding the community and visitors that when they’re ready to do their holiday shopping, to think twice and choose a small business.”
According to Hartley, Black Friday and Small Business Saturday are busy shopping days for Downtown Perry. She expects to see many people downtown.
“We definitely expect to see a lot of people walking along the sidewalks, pop in business, carrying all of their shopping bags, and we hope to see about 100 people at our tree lighting ceremony,” she said.
Over the years, Small Business Saturday and many other downtown events have grown and gotten stronger.
“We see strength and support from the community as it’s really all about recognition, identifying and highlighting our small businesses here within the downtown districts and all that they do for Perry and the Middle Georgia community,” she said.
Hartley emphasized that it is essential to support small businesses, especially during the holiday season.
“This is really the time for customers and the community to give back and support their local businesses,” she said.
Hartley said the city is also excited to see how beautiful and bright the artificial Christmas tree will be on the City Hall lawn.
Along with Small Business Saturday and the tree-lighting ceremony, the city will offer hot chocolate from Bodega Brew, activities for children and horse-drawn carriage rides from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. around the City Hall lawn.
