NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (KNOP) – Hershey Public Schools celebrated the new addition of a book vending machine with a ribbon cutting ceremony Monday.
The book vending machine was awarded by the TeamMates Mentoring Program that was given a READ Nebraska grant from the state.
“The TeamMates Mentoring Organization was fortunate to get this READ grant from the State of Nebraska which has a focus on reading literacy for students in third through fifth grades,” Ashton Honnor, the TeamMates Mentoring Program Marketing & Communications Manager, said.
With the new book vending machine, elementary school students will be rewarded for good behavior with a token they can use to get a free book.
“We’re so excited for Hershey to have one of these book vending machines here. It sounds like for the students here, it’s going to be based on good behavior, how they’re treating their classmates and teachers, as well as how they’re performing in the classroom,” Honnor said.
The grant provides the first 300 books for the vending machine. After the first 300 books have been awarded, other fundraisers held by the TeamMates program in Hershey will go toward scholarships as well as more books.
