For anyone in search of alternative programming to family and football this Thanksgiving, you may be able to spot your town in a new holiday movie.
The film “Sweethearts” is streaming on Max Thanksgiving Day.
The production reported spending more than $19 million filming in New Jersey, the New Jersey Motion Picture and Television Commission tells NJ Advance Media.
“Sweethearts,” starring Kiernan Shipka (”Mad Men,” “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina”) and Nico Hiraga (”Booksmart,” “Goodrich”), is about two college freshmen, Jamie and Ben, who make a pact to break up with their high school sweethearts over Thanksgiving break.
The movie (see trailer below) follows their efforts to deliver on this mission as they return to their hometown.
Jordan Weiss, creator of the Hulu series “Dollface,” helmed the film, her feature directorial debut, which she wrote with Dan Brier (“Heathers”).
Joining Shipka, 25, and Hiraga, 26, in the cast are comedian Caleb Hearon, Tramell Tillman (”Severance”), Ava DeMary (”After Yang”), Charlie Hall (”Single Drunk Female,” “Bel-Air”), Joel Kim Booster (”Fire Island,” “Loot”) and Christine Taylor (”Zoolander,” “Search Party”).
Jersey connections can also be found in two other cast members: Jake Bongiovi, 22, son of Jon Bon Jovi and husband of “Stranger Things” superstar Millie Bobby Brown; and “Saturday Night Live” alum Chloe Troast, 27, who grew up in Ho-Ho-Kus.
“Sweethearts,” arriving at Max via New Line Cinema, filmed in 11 Jersey towns and cities across six counties in 2022 (see full list below).
The movie filmed at Ramapo College in Mahwah and at homes in Cranford, Newark, Demarest and Kinnelon.
Other Cranford filming locations included the Cranford Theater, Délice Macarons and Eastman Clock Plaza.
“Sweethearts” also filmed on the football field at Edison High School and at both the West Orange Fire Station No. 3 on Ridgeway Avenue and Demarest Firehouse.
The production came to the Colonial Diner in Lyndhurst; Parkway Lanes bowling alley on Route 46 in Elmwood Park; Duffy’s Tavern in Paterson (featured prominently in the image above); and UFCW Local 1262 (United Food & Commercial Workers Union) in Clifton.
“Sweethearts,” rated R, is streaming on Max Thursday, Nov. 28 (Thanksgiving).
