A gripping and unconventional action thriller with a dark sense of humour starring Liam Neeson is now available to stream on Netflix.
This riveting and surprisingly hilarious revenge film is the perfect accompaniment to the dark winter evenings as we start to approach the Christmas season.
Netflix subscribers can now stream it at no extra cost and it’s a must-watch for fans of Neeson who want to see him tackle something a little different.
In the Hollywood remake of Norwegian thriller In Order of Disappearance, the Taken star portrays snowplow driver Nels Coxman whose quiet family life in Colorado is disrupted when his son is killed by a Denver drug cartel and he decides to seek vengeance.
Cold Pursuit might sound like typical Neeson fare, but fans and critics agree it’s a far cry from his often maligned blockbuster output.
Rotten Tomatoes lists it among the best action films of 2019 and many top reviewers agree it’s not one to miss.
Entertainment Weekly writes: “If [Cold Pursuit] sounds like murder-by-numbers Liam Neeson Mad Libs, well, it kind of is. But what sets Cold Pursuit apart from its predecessors is its tone.
“It has the jokey, self-amused vibe of an Elmore Leonard novel or one of those arch, wannabe Tarantino knock-offs that sprouted up like toadstools in the wake of Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction and were quickly forgotten.
“It knows exactly what kind of movie it is, but that doesn’t stand in the way of it goosing its bloodbath set pieces with irreverent, off-kilter gallows humor.”
And Empire gave Cold Pursuit four stars, penning: “A typically taciturn turn from Neeson is surrounded by a colourful cast, gallows humour and complete disrespect for cinematic stereotypes. A little bloated, maybe, but deserves kudos for joining the road not Taken.”
Forbes even called it 2019’s “first great comedy”, adding “What makes this movie shine is the quality of the screenplay”, also comparing the film to Tarantino as well as the Coen Brothers.
The thriller has also amassed a huge legion of fans amongst audiences, with fans on the social media film website Letterboxd writing rave reviews.
“Honestly this is better than it has any right to be,” one fan said. “It turns out it’s a black comedy.
“I haven’t seen the foreign original but if you want a Liam Neeson movie that strays from his usual run of the mill action movies.. look no further.”
“Immaculate. That’s the one word that comes to mind when I think of Cold Pursuit,” another review said. “An absolute delight that I could watch over and over again.”
And a final fan wrote: “As funny as it is dark, grim as it is hilarious. Zero structure, no semblance of characters other than brief glimpses of their personality, no plot other than son for a son, but a perfect blend of what’s given to us nonetheless. Definitely a guilty pleasure.”
Cinephiles agree Cold Pursuit is definitely one to put on your radar, so will you be tuning in this week?
