It’s no surprise to hear that animation dominates Netflix, as nine of the ten most populous movies ever on the Top 10 charts have been animated. With The Christmas Chronicles being the one outlier, every other movie on this list ranges from Despicable Me to The Secret Life of Pets 2 to The Grinch. But there’s another animated movie that’s slowly making its way up the charts, giving us one of the longest streaks we’ve ever seen on the daily popularity charts.
That movie? Why, it’s the box office juggernaut Sing, which, in addition to its $634 million worldwide theater gross back in late 2016 and early 2017, has now graced Netflix’s Top 10 Movies list for 56 consecutive days (including today). So while Sing doesn’t qualify as one of the ten most populous performances ever, it does rank in the top ten for best streaks ever.
Let’s take a look at the two lists in question just to show how impressive Sing’s current run is. First, here are the ten movies that have appeared on the Top 10 charts the most:
- The Super Mario Bros. Movie – 277 days
- Sing 2 – 235 days
- Despicable Me – 180 days
- The Secret Life of Pets 2 – 138 days
- Despicable Me 2 – 135 days
- Minions – 125 days
- The Boss Baby – 122 days
- The Grinch – 97 days
- Home – 86 days
- The Christmas Chronicles – 79 days
While Sing might not appear on this all-time list, it does own the fourth-most Top 10 appearances so far in 2024, and could soon pass Trolls Band Together’s total of 71 days.
Now here are are the ten longest streaks we’ve seen from movies on the Top 10 charts:
- The Super Mario Bros. Movie – 151 days
- Sing 2 – 77 days
- We Can Be Heroes – 67 days
- The Mitchells vs. The Machines – 63 days
- Red Notice – 62 days
- Vivo – 58 days
- Sing – 56 days
- The Grinch – 56 days
- Trolls Band Together – 50 days
- How the Grinch Stole Christmas – 49 days
Perhaps, right away, you’ll notice why this streak is so impressive. Only three other movies that achieved one of Netflix’s best streaks ever were able to make the top ten list for most populous movies ever. Which means that Sing joins the ranks alongside The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Sing 2 and The Grinch (a movie whose streak Sing has already passed).
While Sing has flirted with exiting the daily Top 10 charts eight times now in the tenth place position, it has yet to fall off the charts. And if the animated film can hold on for just one more week, it’ll become just one of five movies to reach a streak greater than 63 days, joining both We Can Be Heroes (the only non-animated film on the best streaks list) and The Mitchells vs. The Machines.
Just to add onto how impressive Sing’s streak has been, let’s look at its point total from the Top 10 charts. The system works like this: a first place finish nets you ten points, a second place finish scores nine points, etc., all the way down to tenth place which achieves a single point. Since Sing’s premiere on the Top 10 list back on October 3, no movie has come close to scoring its total of 287 points, with The Secret Life of Pets in a distant second with 212 points. The only non-animated movie that came close was Bad Boys: Ride or Die with 168 points.
In fact, when we look at the yearly point totals, Sing is high up the charts in fourth place, and may catch Minions before year’s end:
- The Super Mario Bros. Movie – 1,145 points
- Trolls Band Together – 402 points
- Minions – 335 points
- Sing – 287 points
- Rebel Ridge – 215 points
- Jack Reacher: Never Go Back – 214 points
- The Secret Life of Pets – 212 points
- The Union – 182 points
- Bad Boys: Ride or Die – 168 points
- Madame Web – 168 points
- The Emoji Movie – 168 points
Obviously no movie will touch the success of The Super Mario Bros., which made the Top 10 charts a whopping 249 times this year alone (277 in total if we count last year). But it’s pretty incredible that Sing has arguably scored a bigger and better run than titans that dominated the pop culture discussion in 2024, like Rebel Ridge, The Union and Madame Web—not to mention movies you don’t even see on that top ten list above, like Anyone But You and Hit Man. It’s all been part of a quiet-yet-loud two months for Sing, which could rank amongst the best-performing movies ever on Netflix if this streak keeps up.
