HARTFORD, CT (WFSB) – Shamika Lebron hosted a free Thanksgiving meal for people in-need.
Lebron said she has always dreamed of hosting Thanksgiving for her community.
“As soon as I came in, I felt the love and the support,” said Eric Winder who is currently homeless.
The group sitting around the table was very soulful and grateful for the meal.
“A lot of love and a lot of donations… We have plenty of happy people to do this in Hartford, to give back the love in the world,” said Christopher Yarmolovich who is currently homeless.
This is the first time Lebron hosted a free community meal.
“I feel so touched, it’s emotional for me because this has always been a dream of mine to help,” said Lebron.
A number of community organizers helped Lebron as well.
Hartford Hospital donated bags of tooth brushes and tooth paste, clean socks, among other necessities to give out to those experiencing homelessness.
“We have blankets, we have coats, and delicious food for everyone… it’s not just me being kind, it’s our community,” Lebron added.
Anna Yong, the owner of Sonic’s Mom Bakery, donated 500 cupcakes for the meal.
Yong previously experienced homelessness and now is able to give back.
“When we were in that situation, this is what [got] us through the holidays. This is what my kids love about the holidays. The kindness of strangers, the warmth of people opening their places and their business. And I love Shamika for what she’s doing here. I had to help,” Yong said.
Lebron and the community helped feed 200 people this Thanksgiving. They hope to do it again next year.
