Local writers gear for third great get-together book launch

Essential Books Writers Association (EBWA) members are set to converge at Batanai Mall in Harare on Friday for the third edition of their annual Great Get-Together Book Launch.
The event, which is expected to be a celebration of creativity, will feature readings, spoken word poetry, book launches, book sales and exchanges, a photoshoot lineup, and a writers’ lunch and drinks.
Twenty-five emerging writers, including Tinashe Muchuri, Aleck Kaposa, Biggie Chiranga, Oscar Gwiriri and his National Arts Merit Awards (NAMA) award-winning son Onald, Pamela Phiri, Perpetua Mutembo Gonese, Tebeth Chanetsa, and Herbert Chiweshe, will launch their books at the event.
EBWA chairperson, Aleck Kaposa, said the association aims to bring writers together to create a thriving book industry that brings socio-economic development.
“The association seeks to promote members’ works through book festivals, business exhibitions, and book shows,” he said.
“We also aim to identify and nurture creative writing talent in young people through various writing activities, running creative writing competitions, book sales, endorsement deals, and improving the public’s appreciation of Zimbabwean literature.”
The association, which was founded in 2022 by Kaposa, a three-time NAMA nominee, is registered with the National Arts Council of Zimbabwe and has been instrumental in promoting local writers’ works.
The Creative Kids at Essentials (CKE) programme, which has seen child writers like 10-year-old Kahile Chitovoro gain fame with her book “The Ugly Girl”, will also be officially launched at the event.
Beaven Tapureta, a seasoned writer, editor, critic, and director of the NAMA Award-winning Writers International Network, will be the guest of honour.
The event is expected to provide a platform for writers to interact, network, share ideas, and collaborate.
We are excited to host this event, which promises to be a celebration of creativity and talent,” Kaposa said. “We invite book lovers, writers, and the general public to join us for an exciting day of literature and networking.”
The event will run from 8am to 5pm. Entrance is free, and everyone is invited to attend.
