RICHLAND TWP., Pa. – Just in time for holiday shopping, new tenants – including restaurants offering soups, breakfast burritos, gluten-free dishes and Italian and Latin American specialties – are continuing to breathe new life into the Quakertown Farmers Market.
The Richland Township shopping venue, affectionately known as “Q-Mart” to locals, welcomed Bee & Butterly Cafe. on Friday, Nov. 29.
The cafe is holding a soft launch – featuring a limited menu of coffee and specialty desserts – on Friday, and the business will hold its grand opening – featuring its full menu, drinks and specialty desserts – on Saturday.
Bee & Butterfly Cafe occupies an updated space that previously housed Babushka’s, a restaurant that held its last day of operation in early November.
The new cafe will offer handcrafted lattes, coffees and teas, including Bucks County Coffee, butterfly honey tea lattes, Southern sweet tea and vanilla honey oat milk lattes.
Plus, it will feature delicious foods such as New York water bagels, sausage gravy and biscuits, breakfast burritos, Brunswick stew and desserts.
Bee & Butterfly Cafe follows a string of other new Quakertown Farmers Market tenants, including vendors offering soups, flatbreads, jerky and baked goods.
Additionally, other businesses – including Yo Mama’s Kitchen – are coming soon the market.
Yo Mama’s Kitchen, taking over the former Mi’s Korean Kitchen space in Dept. 457, has a tentative opening date of Dec. 6, according to Sara Hoadley, the market’s marketing director.
Yo Mama’s will be a gluten free restaurant featuring items such as build-your-own breakfast bowls, barbeque, mac and cheese, stuffed chicken and desserts.
Breakfast bowls will feature base options of home fries, fresh cut fries, potato pancakes or corn bread, along with various protein, cheese and vegetable options.
Other menu highlights will include glazed salmon, roast beef, roasted potatoes, au gratin potatoes, street corn, black bean and corn salad and barbecue items such as ribs, chicken and pulled pork.
Joining a growing roster
Quakertown Farmers Market has welcomed more than a half dozen new vendors in recent months.
Newly opened and recently expanded tenants include:
* Soul Soup (Dept. 311)
Soul Soup opened the first weekend in November, Hoadley said. This is the second location for the business, which also has a stand at the Allentown Fairgrounds Farmers Market. The restaurant features a variety of homemade soups and freshly prepared hoagies.
* Flats & Filled (Dept. 315)
Flats & Filled held a soft opening in mid-November, Hoadley said. The business features a variety of Italian cuisine, flatbreads, wraps and tomato pie. The owner also has plans to offer cheesecakes, tiramisu and cookies for dessert.
* Cool Pad Yimi (Dept. 443)
Cool Pad Yimi opened Oct. 18, Hoadley said. The store carries a variety of Chinese Lego kits, action figures, Chinese jewelry, lanterns, plush toys and balloons.
* Fox’s House of Jerky (Dept. 328)
Fox’s opened in early October, Hoadley said. The shop carries a large variety of jerky, including beef, fish, game, pork, turkey and exotic. Some of the exotic options include alligator, elk, buffalo, camel, kangaroo, salmon and shark.
* Evil Empire Comics & Evil Empire House of Horrors (Dept. 405)
Evil Empire has expanded again, doubling the size of its store, Hoadley said. Evil Empire has joined forces with Battle Ready Empire to add Civil War memorabilia including rifles, sabers, Civil War magazines, military figurines and model kits.
* Bargain Bosses (Dept. 259)
Bargain Bosses recently opened, offering bulk and closeout items, Hoadley said. Each weekend, the business offers a variety of items such as tools, cleaning products, copy paper and clothes.
* Forbitten Fruitz (Dept. 245)
Forbitten Fruitz opened at the end of October, Hoadley said. The business offers fresh chocolate-dipped fruits, cupcakes, cheesecakes, mini cakes, pies, cookies and pastries. Gluten-free, sugar-free and vegan options are also available each weekend.
* Joanlyn Events (Dept. 323)
Joanlyn Events opened at the end of October, Hoadley said. Joanlyn Events is a luxury event design business that does weddings, corporate events, birthdays, gender reveal parties, Sweet 16 parties, quinceañeras,, flower arrangements, holiday decor, balloon bouquets and more.
Longstanding tradition
The new tenants are joining more than 100 shops at the Quakertown Farmers Market, which was founded as a produce and general merchandise auction in 1932 by farmer Stanley Rottenberger.
“As word spread, local farmers and merchants brought their good to sell inside the barn, outside on tables and from the backs of their trucks,” a message on the market’s website reads. “The Quakertown Farmers Market was born!”
Today, the 170,000-square-foot market showcases an eclectic mix of businesses that includes delis, produce stands, restaurants and craft, clothing and furniture shops. There’s also an indoor/outdoor flea market behind the main building.
Longstanding market tenants include Davis Meats, Fleck’s Bakery, Video Bonanza, Record Revival music store, Race Place hobby shop (featuring a slot-car race track) and Fins, Feathers, Paws & Claws pet store and The Coop, offering chicken wings, seasoned potato wedges and more.
