A 47-year-old man from Odisha was arrested in West Bengal 17 years after he allegedly murdered his business partner in Mumbai, police said.
In 2007, Rajib Kalu Haji Shaikh fatally stabbed his partner, Neelanchal Panigrahi, an Odisha native, after a heated argument over financial matters. The incident occurred at the victim’s residence in Ganesh Murti Nagar, Mumbai.
The police tried to arrest the accused multiple times. However, they were unsuccessful.

According to case details, the accused, Shaikh, a resident of Murshidabad in West Bengal, was a close friend and business partner of the victim. He was addicted to alcohol.
In October 2007, when the incident took place, both the accused and the victim were drinking alcohol at Panigrahi’s residence while his wife was cooking. An altercation over finances led to Shaikh stabbing Panigrahi in the stomach, causing the latter to fall to the ground, profusely bleeding.
While his wife rushed him to a nearby hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries the following day, on October 16, 2007.
Following the murder, Shaikh was charged under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code.
Despite multiple attempts to capture him in 2007, 2008, and 2020, Shaikh managed to evade arrest for nearly two decades. He was finally apprehended at a rehabilitation centre in Disha.
“The region he hails from is close to the Bangladesh border, so he would disappear and evade arrest. He has done so multiple times whenever a police team attempted to capture him. During our recent arrest, we were surrounded by angry locals and villagers. The situation was risky, but with the help of the local police, we brought the accused to Mumbai on transit remand,” police said.
Shaikh has been remanded to police custody.
